Having ATL in my logbook has been a bucket list item of mine for awhile. I’m planning a night cross-country down to one of the three Atlanta area GA airports (RYY, LZU, or PDK) not sure which yet, to add to my cross-country and night total times for IR and CPL.

I’d be arriving from the north so I’d assume they’d queue me in for 8L or 26R. If I hit the VFR request with Atlanta Tracon around 10:30 or 11p, what are the odd’s that I’d be able to do this?

Anyone of my Atlanta friends who are more familiar with the sequencing and such, let me know and also the ATC guys who may have some advice to offer.

Also, might be a dumb Q but assuming I just did a touch n go, I wouldn’t be slapped with any landing fee’s or anything correct? What about if I ended up making it a full stop-taxi back?

    Gracias.

Guessing after midnight would be best. Last scheduled departures go out between 11 & midnight.

    Dunno about the fees.

Reason for my question, was that I watched a video on YouTube of a guy making a full stop, pick up a passenger from Signature and then taxi back out in a 172 during the late evening and they worked him in just fine. So would it really matter if it was late night or would a late evening arrival work the same if I did a full stop- taxi back to 26L?

You can taxi back. I don't believe you're assessed a landing fee unless you leave the movement area.

I didn't mean to imply you couldn't go land there. I thought you meant to avoid the airline banks.

I've flown in there in GA airplanes a few times during the day and it's not a big deal if you want to do it during the day. I think they have a landing fee so you'd probably get hit with that. If you go to the FBO I'm sure there's a ramp fee and whatever else they can sock to you

Question is, do they hit you with the landing fee if you just do a touch n go or full stop and taxi back?

I’ve tried calling the tower and Tracon and neither of them answer.

I would not be surprised if they do. City of Atlanta ( there's your sign) runs the airport.

I know several people that have done this. Let me ask around. I know they prefer a call ahead and you should expect a late night arrival.

Yes, I called Signature and they read off some asinine fee’s but I’m not sure the gal understood that I wouldn’t be using FBO service, just a full stop taxi back. Also called Tracon and they said TnG’s are not allowed, so it would have to be a full stop and taxi back landing. If those fee’s are charged just for that than I’ll be scratching the idea.

    @write-stuff @Dave Theisen

Any info on the fee’s without any FBO service?

I really don’t know the answer you are looking for. I’ve been in there many times, but always had to go to the FBO for pax. Glad someone else was paying the fees! :)

Heh! Yeah, I called Signature and asked what the landing fee’s were if I just did a full stop and taxi-back but I don’t think she understood that I didn’t need FBO services. She quoted me $39+ a security fee+ a handling fee so it was right around $50. If that’s the case and she actually knew that it was only a full stop and then taxi back to the runway than I think I’ll take a rain check on it! :)

I'd go at 2am or something. Big airports are just like little airports, just bigger. I'd much rather go to a cool grass strip then have to deal with ATL.

I've read of others doing touch and go's late at night and I never heard a landing fee mentioned. That's usually levied by a FBO. Since you aren't going there, I don't see who would bill you.

    From AirNav:

Probably a better source of info than Signature.

Some airports have cargo operations (Fedex, DHL, UPS), which come in clusters during the night. I don't know if there is any at ATL, but calling the tower controller or airport management might be a good idea.

Kind of what I was thinking. I guess tower takes down your tail number and then just expect a bill in the mail within 4-6 weeks?

I really don't think you'd get charged anything. I've done many touch and go's at PDK and FTY and even though if you go to a facility you get charged, never been dinged for just doing touch and go's.

Maybe each has around a half dozen flights arrivals, some smaller operators too. Not a biggie, 5 runways there. ;)

Those fees are a lot lower than SFO. I've never landed there, primarily due to the $126 (last I checked) landing fee...without even starting on what the FBO wants to charge on top of that.

I really don't understand the allure of flying into any class bravo just for grins. That'd be like the very last thing on my list.

I seriously doubt it would be approved. As far as I know, unlike landing, there's no expectation that such a service will be provided. That said, if it were, I have no idea.

You could probably do 4 or five t&gs, how long is the runway, 10,000 ft?

Heck, some people fly airplanes that want to land backwards for fun. I got to do a night T&G at CVG (flying out of LUK); it was very cool, even if "just for grins". I could have done several on that long runway; I touched on the numbers and was off before the TDZ.

I have ATL in my logbook. I flew in there with my instructor after I got my private ticket. We flew a Navajo in there to drop off some lawyer type to catch a flight. It was at night, dodging thunderstorms and pretty busy. I will say that it was a very cool experience that I never want to do again.

If it's a bucket list item, why would you let the potential for a landing fee stop you?

Based on the video below, landing at KORD (similar size and traffic as KATL) took some phone planning with the local TRACON. The pilot was advised to come at night and on IFR.

Some airports have the FBO collect a landing fee. At those, if you never set foot in the FBO, you won't pay the fee. Other airports record all arrivals and send a bill. In that case, you will get the same charge whether you do the touch-and-go or full-stop landing. It is not likely you can do a touch-and-go at any time at an airport like ATL, so it is moot point.
If you want to know how much a landing will cost, a call to the airport's administrative office will get you the answer. According to the internets at
http://atlanta.elaws.us/code/coor_ptii_ch22_artiii_div2_sec22-87 , it' $1.52 per thousand pound, but I don't know how you would pay.
