Being a target in an MOA

I always laugh when people say this. "Yeah well I'll just slow down, then what will you do?" We don't slow down enough to fly next to aircraft going less than 250kias. Could we? Sure, but then we'd be putting ourselves in a bad situation.

If you are intercepted, there are two jets there. One you see that flies by you and another that's about 5 miles back with a radar lock directing traffic. We take turns doing racetrack patterns around slow movers. If you fly slower it actually makes it easier.

maybe we should start using Hornets for ADIZ defense.....

< quite comfortable at 100 KIAS :wink2:

Mostly because the ANG won't buy them.

But also because it's more important that we can go 1.5m+ at 50k' than to fly 30 ktas slower.

Yeah? Well just be aware that five miles behind your five mile back plane is a Cessna 150 just waiting for you to "make your move".

:D

Try to read between the lines. Humor is a good thing. It separates us from other species. Without humor, we are nothing but animals. Well, animals that fly. And NO, don't you dare call me a "pigeon". :goofy:

Can you get a consistent radar lock on something small, wood, and fabric like my Flybaby?

What if it's cruising at about 5 to 10 ft AGL?

I'd imagine it'd be an absolute ***** to intercept and track something like a Flybaby on a 200 ft ceiling day if it were cruising on the deck. Especially since ATC radar wouldn't be seeing it. But..I'm no fighter pilot :)

We weren't a target but while on flight following in the Norfolk area, we got the 'warning' from ATC for the two Jets flying into Oceans NAS: 'Top Gun 1 and 2, traffic at your 12 o'clock at 8,500' northbound'. The traffic was us and gave us just enough time to look for them and see them passing below us... :D Very cool!

I was flying east IFR out of KOLM a couple years ago and a C-17 had to stop his climb until our paths were no longer intersecting. I was peddling that 172 as hard as I could to keep climbing to clear the Cascades ahead of me. I wish I had a camera, a view from above of an airborne C-17 isn't something you see too often.

He's not gonna call you pigeon, you get the new nickname of "Mort" and it ain't short for Mortimer but you can tell yerself it is...

Can't say I was a target, but one time, when passing through an MOA in upstate New York I was told that there were A-10's in the area but they are usually too low to show up on radar. If one popped up, they would let me know. A little while later they called with this - (read it in your fastest ATC voice)
"Cessna123, you have traffic at your 3 o'clock.. um 9 o'clock, never mind."

Did you see anything?

Old Uncle Mort,
He was sawed off and short
Stood ooooonly 4 foot 2
But he acted like a giant
When he goooot a piiint
Of that good old mooouuuntain dew!

:drink::drink::drink:

Oh, sorry, wrong Mort, huh? :dunno:

Maybe...depends on how it ended fer good ol' Uncle Mort

I try, it's just the same thing all the time. People usually have that look on their face that they are so smart to have come up with that and there's just no way for us to deal with it. It always makes me laugh at least a little.

If you have a metal engine in there we can get a lock on it. The easier thing to do is use the heater (aim-9x) to track something like that. It's incredibly sensitive and has no problem tracking even very small motors.

Well CRAP! That's just not in my playbook. :D

Can you lock and track a motorcycle on a road that you can't see with the 9x? Seems like it'd be pretty hard to know what you were locking with no sight and a heat profile equivalent to many vehicles and other such things on the ground.

Well you have to see it or. Radar lock it to put the seeker on the target. The 9x has logic in it to keep from tracking things on the ground (unless it's in ground mode) but it occasionally happens anyway.

just 'member that we all are gunnin' fer ya now...yup, two 150's and a couple of squirt guns...not just any squirt guns, super soakers, long range super soakers...yup, them things'll get ya...bet yer tremblin' in yer boots and thinkin' 'bout transferin' to the Navy now aren't cha?

Don't make us scramble the 172s Eagles won't want none
of that

Even if you lock onto the Flybaby, it's got a secret weapon. He can just hit the brakes and you'll fly right by. :D

is there room for Jesse and a stinger in the cockpit? or will he strap the stinger on the side?

It really won't matter how he carries it, the exhaust from the launch will destroy the Fly Baby. His only chance would be to somehow drop it from above. Or wait for the target to land and walk over carrying the missile . . . :D

Just curious about the technical limitations of the equipment. I consider it incredibly unlikely I'll ever be in a scenario where I'm trying to evade a pair of Eagles in a Flybaby. But, if I were, I'd hope like hell it was about 100 ft overcast and I'd try, from a signature perspective, to blend in with traffic by navigating on the deck over roads :)

That would make it tough for sure. Heaters don't see through clouds so you'd just have to worry about the amraam - I sure as hell wouldn't be going to 100' on an overcast day to catch you. In the U.S., the biggest likelihood is you'd be met wherever you land anyway, intercepts have to go crazy far off the ridiculous deep end of insanity to even think about employing ordinance.
