Beers to Enjoy While PIC

Athletic's Hazy IPA (Free Wave) was briefly available on tap locally and was far better than the canned version (which I also like).

I just tried the canned version. Not really a fan, but it's okay. If I ever see it on tap I might give it a go to see just how far "far better" is.

My local shop has expanded it's offerings to all of the Athletic varieties that aren't limited to their subscribers. They're even offering a single tall boy of the blue can IPA. My only gripe with Athletic so far is they taste "thin" for lack of a better descriptor. Whereas I'm really enjoying the Sierra Nevada Trail Pass varieties now. The IPAs are available in 6 packs at my store but the 4 style variety is a 12-pack.

If you live in the vicinity of Brewster, MA there's really no excuse to not try NAs if you're so inclined. I'll snap a picture next time I'm in there.

I wish there were some good options for NA wine, but most of the ones I’ve tried were awful.
My wife and daughter went through a number of alcohol removed wines during dry January (cheaters) and determined that Seaglass was their favorite.

While I think the subject line was a joke, be careful when consuming NA beer near being a required crew (and especially if you're on HIMS monitoring). NA beer can be as high as 0.5% and the zero alcohol stuff can still be up to 0.05%. A few of these and you will be at a detectable level.

Your liver eliminates the alcohol in one NA beer in 6 minutes. So you would pretty much have to try to be detected.

It's not the BAC that is the problem. If you're on EtG testing, you'll have a positive result up to 80 hours after you imbibe.

The Town recycling center allows our Scouts to have a shed where folks can drop off their cans for us to fundraise off of instead of throwing them in the town bin. Today, we went in to bag up the cans and I noticed an exponential increase in the number of NA and 0.0 varieties.

A bunch of Mich Ultra 0.0...seemed to be a lot more water than normal on the floor.

A deadheading pilot is not allowed to drink on the plane, even if he's off-duty on his way home. Sends the wrong message.

Drinking NA beer while being PIC can give the same wrong impression. Imagine you have a mishap, and the first thing reported on the news is "lineman saw the pilot drinking a beer before take-off". The public opinion will have you condemned, hanged, drawn and quartered well before the prelim would come out stating no alcohol was found in your system.

Yet another reason that it's important to give the line crew a case of Shiner Bock from time to time.

Any recommendations for ginger beer?
(outside of mixing it into a Moscow Mule, that is)

I bought a non alcohol wine a few months ago.. straight vinegar, no other words to describe it. I actually think they intentionally converted the alcohol content into vinegar intentionally to be able to market it as non alcohol.. it may have made a good vinaigrette, but it got dumped down the drain…

Once you’ve tried Bundaberg you’ll never try anything else. Oh and mixed with Goslings black seal rum (not made with real seals!) you’ll have a dark and stormy which is very nice.

I tried something called Bero. As a beer substitute it sucked. It’s not nasty like a skunky beer. Just has a weird bite to it. If I need NA beer, Michelob Ultra is close enough.

The Athletics are kinda starting to grow on me. They all taste a little "thin" to me. However, my local beer store has single tall boy IPAs that I occasionally grab when I'm in the cooler. For fake IPAs I think Sierra Nevadas are much better. I haven't tried the Upside Dawn yet.

Picked up Lagunitas' Hazy NA IPA. Grey box, silver can. It's...ok. I'm not let down that I bought it but probably won't buy it again. Very strong citrus flavor in it, though. I love that it says on the box that for the best Lagunitas experience to pour into a mason jar. Having spent some time in the Petaluma site I can attest that there's something different about it.

At my airline, under limited circumstances, you are allowed to drink on a deadhead. Personally I would never, but it is specifically outlined in our CBA.

My view is NA beer consumption is practice for the real thing.
Kind of like eating a fake burger when vegetarian.
