Altimeter setting below MSL?

During low levels in a C-130 over the Dead Sea in Jordan, the altimeter read -1,030. The instruments surely didn't break.

I had a chance to do that one some years back (Israeli third) in a 172 but a "Libyan Low" was coming through that day :(.

I did land at Jackie Cochran field, though.

What's the elevation of the airport on the left side of this picture (down below)? Where was this picture taken?

Now, what is your altimeter going to read before takeoff here?

Bingo! Funny that the top of Masada is about sea level.

Oh, and I took that picture about 10 years ago. Need to go back.
 
Plus indio/thermal is like Palm Springs younger straight gang banger cousin.

Speaking of Thermal...

On a good day, you can run over to the Owens Valley in your Skyhawk or Cherokee, find a ridge, and shut off the engine. Who sez Cessna and Piper don't make sailplanes? :confused: :p
