Our airport recently decided they were going to require photo ID badges for all tenants. My opinion of this is it is just a stupid intrusive plan that does nothing but add costs and protect the jobs of the lazy county employees. Now that I have stated my opinion I am looking for some facts.

This airport is a reliever airport for a medium size city, nothing spectacular, no control tower, nothing super busy, nothing nearby that is national security critical, no 121 traffic, etc. A GA reliever airport that is sucking the taxpayers dry.

How many of you guys have this requirement at your airport?

What airport is this so I know to avoid it?

Jackson Hole Wy has badges.... Good for 2 years.. But, we do have 10-15 commercial flights in and out each day...

How do these airports handle transient aircraft? Supposing I landed for gas and a lunchbreak at an airport with ID requirements, would they have to escort me to and from my plane each time I needed access?

Mark,
Welcome to POA!

Is this airport fenced? I assume it is by your description. How do you currently get through the fence/gate? I have an ID that gets me through the gate for access tot he ramp, etc.

Next up: they will require registration and collect $$ for each vehicle that you want to have access to the field.

Yes......

I did my training at TLH (Tallahassee, FL) which is a class C airport. I had to pay a forty dollar fee to the airport for the badge and take a two hour online course to get it. I also had to give the flight school a $50 deposit since they sponsored me for the badge. I guess they are on the hook for a fine if I lose it. TLH is a commercial airport with full ten foot high fencing and all automated gates and this badge opens all the ones on the GA side of the field.

BWI does this. It's the most agravating thing you ever did see. Each and every time you go to your plane you have to wait for an 'escort'. So it turns into a jobs program that I have to pay for with higher fees / fuel cost.

The infuriating thing is the FBO isn't even close to the terminal. Other side of a runway and at least a mile away. Plus, it's crazy that I can drive my plane around on the ground and even fly in the air...but to WALK on a stupid ramp miles from the terminal to MY plane I need to be supervised by some ramper with far less background checks than me.

bit of a rant there but the place really ticks me off.

Not us. And we're inside the Washington DC Flight Restriction Zone. None of the "Maryland Three" airports require them.

Is your airport staffed 24/7? How will they check badges after hours?

Fact: Remind management that you already have a real ID...A federally issued pilot certificate and state issued drivers' license.

Fact: Photo ID can be fraudulently made

Or are we talking security access cards to get through gates? Those are pretty standard.

We have them at KLBE. It's a class D with Spirit and some smaller commercial flights in and out daily.

The TSA has tightened things up at our airport. They stop by the flight school every so often to go through the student files and make sure all the paperwork is in order.

Our ID's update yearly for $13 (I think) and it's a pretty simple process. The ID is what gets you through the gates and the flight school.

I think I'll just stay out here in the wild wild west :)

At IAD you have to identify yourself to the girl at the desk at the FBO, but they'll usually just open the door for you (there's a button behind the desk). After that you usually have free run of the ramp. Of course if you FLY IN there's nobody to check you until you actually get inside the building.

I have a card key to open the gate in the fence, but no ID needed. Actually, I still have a key to the padlock on another gate, too. I should check and see if that still works if the automatic gate quits working sometime. :D

At klnk we have them. Opens all gates and doors. You are supposed to be wearing them while on airport property. If you aren't airport police will stop you and ask to see them. If you don't have one you will be escorted off the property. I have been checked several times. I have been in the airport security office several times and they have cameras showing about everywhere. I have been checked in my hanger at 2 am in the morning when I was leaving for a trip. I actually kind of like the idea of a little extra security as you can leave your hanger open without to much worry of anything disappearing. I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me. This is Lincoln Nebraska so that blows your out west freedom theory.

I think some of the GA airports are doing the ID thing proactively to try to keep TSA at bay. Maybe that's not a bad thing :).

I don't know of any in southern ohio that have that, other than CVG and DAY, not sure about LUK (Lunken).

If it bothers you that much, hangar your plane somewhere else. :dunno:

At KPGD we have electric gates and photo ID. You can not get inside without it. Some badges will only open certain gates. We do have commercial flights here. They are open 24/7.

Not that bad as long as you have the badge. Our FBO got fined because there was a guy doing something on the interior of an airplane with no badge. He had come in with the owner of the bird who did have a badge but the owner left the airport for a few minutes.

The good news is they aren't charging for the ID, no requirements for anything. Just go get your picture taken. We have access cards to get through the gate but then we can roam freely. I suppose they will have to hire a police officer on overtime to check. Just more gov't nonsense that adds no additional value. The airport is already GA unfriendly, higher
than surrounding area costs and they continue to spend money like water.
They spend millions building a new ramp that has 6 planes on it and those 6 planes just moved from a ramp area 100 feet away. My big complaint is just the overall government stupidity of it all.

Well, they're not charging for them YET.

I'd be interested in how the airport fits into the TSA's guidelines (http://www.tsa.gov/sites/default/fi..._guidelines_for_general_aviation_airports.pdf)
Note that they don't recommend ID cards until the airport scores 25 or higher using the criteria in Appendix A.

Airports that "require" an escort out to the ramp, I'd love to be able to coordinate to have about 12 families with "temporarily bratty" kids show up all about within 5 minutes of each other - often, just to be a headache.

While we are talking about ID requirements, I had this happen to me last week.... So , I get the usual card in the mail from WYDOT reminding me my drivers license is coming up for renewal.. We have to renew every 5 years.. Keep in mind I have been driving for 40 years and have renewed either here in Wyo or back in Fla 10 + times... ..

So, I walk in and expect the whole thing, plus the eye test, to take maybe 5 minutes and the nice lady proceeds to tell me about the (NEW) law enacted back in 2011.:dunno::dunno:..

They now need two forms of local ID like power bills, tax bills etc.. PLUS the vehicle registration.. PLUS either a Passport or a ORIGINAL birth certificate.. NO photocopies:no:... I always figured the next certificate I would get would be a death cert... I have not seen my birth cert in 40 years, don't know where it is and I just sat there getting pretty frusterated with the whole deal....

So I politely ask her why all the needed additional ID's just to renew a drivers license :dunno::dunno::dunno:..

So she says back in 2010 the Dept of Homeland Security started requiring ALL states to get all the documents before issuing a drivers license.... I sit there for a second and have a brainstorm... I tell her I have the perfect ID in my truck and will be back in 10 seconds with it... So.. I get my Dept of Homeland Security issued airport ID with my pic on it and present it to her, reminding her I had to go through a extensive background check, get fingerprinted, the card even has biometric data included in it... She looks it over REAL close and then proceeds to tell me it is not a valid ID for her purposes.:mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2: ..

So.. I had to call KY and spend 30 bucks on an (OFFICIAL) birth certificate................. Just to renew my DL........ God as my witness, I never thought this great country would degrade to this point..:sad:

Rant off.....

Airplane to FBO: they don't care as they can't stop someone from walking.

FBO to Airplane: they lock the door in the name of 'security'.

You see...if you walk away from the runways towards the building then you're not a threat. If'n you walk towards the airplanes then you may well be a terrorist or into child pornography and must be stopped at all costs.

Yes...terrorism is the new child porn. It's useful to stop whatever you want.

Well that lady is full of crap. My MI DL was issued April 2011, and I didn't go through any of that.

What happens if you don't have any tax bills or utility bills in your name. Or a vehicle in your name, or...

That's what I mean. When the door locks, tell the kids to go bat-**** crazy. Demanding they want to leave, or get something in the plane, or whatever it is that makes the FBO complain to the airport authority that the policy is woo-woo.

Mine was issued in March 2011 and I renewed online. I just looked it up and online renewal is still being used.

A far as airport ID goes, my ID is just a company ID which no one checks anyway, and I seem to be able to go out on the ramp unescorted at almost any airport with only a few exceptions which are large airline airports.

I will be damned...... The lady lied to me.. She said it was a national requirement..:mad:..

When my Birth cert gets here in a week or so I will go back and get my DL renewed... Then when I have it in my hand I will show her this thread...

Here is the Wyoming requirement........................

Renew in Person

Visit any DMV office with:
  • Your current license.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • Two documents proving Wyoming residency.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship. The state is specific about this, requiring one of the following documents:
    ―A certified birth certificate*
    ―A valid U.S. passport
―A consular report of birth abroad
    ―A certificate of citizenship
    ―A certificate of naturalization
  • Payment to cover the $15 license renewal fee ($18 for motorcycle licenses).
You'll also need to pass a vision test while at the DMV office.
*NOTE: If you were born in Wyoming, you can, if needed, obtain a certified birth certificate from the WY Department of Health's Vital Statistic Services for $13.

i'm guessing wyoming passed a law getting all uptight about making sure that there was no way no how that one single illegal immigrant could ever get a drivers license.

How do you prove Wyoming residency?

I can pay taxes and utilities in Wyoming, it doesn't mean I'm a resident.

That's BS. Belongs in the SZ.

I could easily say 99.956% of republicans are f'ing retarded with charts and graphs to prove it. FoxNews has lied and slandered and been caught so many times conmen wonder when it'll end.

Easy. Several C-5's worth of pallets of US cash sent to Iraq and Afganistan as a result of some President making up 'weapons of mass destruction'. The hard cash is a fraction of money spent. Iraqi oil was supposed to make us whole on the rest but...those f'ing republicans lied again. Not their faults...they're liars. We should blame our selves and stop watching Fox.

A never ending 'war' tends to have that effect.

War is OVER..... Debt is now shooting up like a sky rocket.......
