AirAsia Jet Plunges 24,000 Feet in Just 9 Minutes

It's common enough that Charlotte will just tell us to "make it quick". Especially behind Envoy or Republic! LOL

Years ago ATL approach controllers used to clear us for the "slam dunk" approach. We'd be at 11K on downwind in the E120 Brasilia, abeam the numbers, dirty it up (gear, flaps, idle) and make the runway. Not a big deal at all but it was fun. Then all of a sudden approach quit issuing it. Guess some higher up heard it and said, ooh, they prang it in and we're a contributor or something like that is my guess.

Indeed.... im sure you're aware, but for others that are not, that's not the same as an emergency descent from altitude. Not sure about your aircraft, but the Bus has altitude limits on gear and flaps. The best way in the Bus is a barber pole descent with brakes, at least from altitude.

There used to be one at Newark, maybe still is, known as the Crowbar One Arrival." They'd run you right over the numbers with about a 220 degree turn back to final. The joke was you'd open a window and throw out a crowbar and then beat it to the runway.

I'm still wondering about slipping the big planes. The Gimli Glider guy did it in a 767. Obviously it's not a routine thing to do, the passengers wouldn't like it. But what are the aerodynamics? For instance, planes with winglets, the tall ones. Would it get pretty squirrelly doing a foot to the floor slip in one of those? Could you even do it?

That was one of the sportier test cards when we were in the Flight Test Program:D.

Cheers

They do it overseas for their tactical arrival as well. No window to look out of in the back can be quite disorienting. Generally it's the last 5 minutes so not too many get sick.

What will that give you for fpm? At 250 in the Bus your scenario will be no more than 2500.
At 210 you're lucky to get 2000.

So we got the slam dunk this last trip. 210 with spoilers I was getting 1900/2100 FPM.

Flaps 20 and full boards does a pretty good job. Descending at 210 no flaps and spoilers kind of sucks.

Yeah or do flaps 30 if you really really need to get down. Like your above TRI and need to be on the ground yesterday! Lol
