2026 Flying Goals

I'm always hesitant to write these things down. For 2026, get the IFR written done, and prep to be able to take the IFR checkride. So my goal is to learn it.

Land at the remaining grass strips up in the Cascade Mountains that I haven't visited yet. Get a good night picture of my plane on the Alvord Desert floor with a clear backdrop of stars. The pact couple of times I've attempted that picture the weather refused to cooperate. If anyone has advice for the starry backdrop picture, I'm wide open for recommendations.

Modest this year
Get the transponder fixed now. Maybe radios / gps in april
Get into flight status with CAP
Fly to Key West and Oshkosh
Fly 100 hours
Along the way, get the second knee replacement done.

This coming summer ‘26, gonna fly my RV-8 to France. But, no, not that one; I’m thinking a wee bit closer… St Pierre and Miquelon, a pair of French owned islands up near St John’s, Newfoundland. No real reason other than it’d be a cool spot to mark on my travel map. Ouí.

Get a type rating
Fly 400 hours at work and at least 50 in the Mooney, preferably a lot more
Take my boys flying more, including "soloing" the little one (ie, taking him flying without mommy along).
Finish IOE
Upgrade to captain again
Make it to a PoA fly-in

Never met my goals from last year…worked too much!

NW Arkansas (Fly Oz)
Big Bend
NM/CO Mtn airports

In my little C170B.
Put Fly Oz on the short list. We were there last September and will be again in 2026. It’s phenomenal!

What's with #10? Are you leaving us? :dunno:

Fly at least 10% more this year than last, continuing the tradition over the last few years.

Add somewhere around Leavenworth, KS to the list of airports landed at.

Fly a fully coupled ILS.

Add:

Verbalize every aspect of the flight sync’d with the PHAK/AFH.

In the voice of David Attenborough.

1-keep flying at least 100 hrs/yr
2-be safe and stay alive
3-give at least 10 people their first flight in a small plane
4-Sun-N-Fun
5-take a trip out west
6-have a POA meet up at our airport

Count me in for #6!

And let me know if you fly down for SnF.

Yeah, not wad up the plane, even hitting a duck in the pattern could be expensive. I should fly a little more, overdue for a Mackinac Island visit.

Ok, you get preferred parking. Don’t think I’m gonna fly into the chaos of SnF, may take the camper

If you don’t want to camp, park the plane at KGIF. They usually run a shuttle, and there’s car rental at the terminal.
