2010 6Y9 Fly-In update

May do. The Sawyer TAF isn't quite as rosy as that, but we'll see. As I recall, the field drains pretty well, but I'd like a PIREP on the condition if possible.

Yeah, afternoon is looking a lot better on Saturday, morning still a bit breezy. Then Sunday and Monday is going to be about perfect.

Apple crisp just went into the oven for the Friday night pre-party at my place.

And now the TAFs for SE MI are out. They're all pretty much the same but here's the one closest to me. This isn't anything I'd choose to fly in, even if I had the rating...

I've flown in worse. :D We're leaving tomorrow morning for 6Y9.

I'd much rather punch through a front from the back side than head on.

For those of you thinking of coming to Ed's tonight, give an ETA on your arrival time and we can meet you at 9D9. There's a good brew pub in Hastings that we can head to for a beer after the first plane arrives while we wait for any others to arrive. The pub is only a couple of minutes from the airport so it's no big deal to run back and forth as planes arrive.

The ceilings here are about what the TAF's predict. Plenty high enough for VFR flight. The winds were around 270 & 15 when I was at the airport earlier. The main runway is 300 so it yields a slight cross wind but we have a grass 270 that's smooth and well kept that's an option too.

Oh, I didn't think you'd stay home Ed, I was speaking for myself only. Hope I can join y'all next year.

I know. I do things most people wouldn't. Land at Gaston's at night, land at 6Y9 at night, weave my way back through NH and VT with 45kt headwinds, fly 3-1/2 hours IMC with only a single VOR for navigation. :D

The A team is heading out of FKL soon probably a 6 to 6:30 arrival at 9d9

And with handwritten approach plates, don't forget!

The Sooper Yooper Yankee should be wheels up by 5:45 - traffic permitting.
With the headwinds, I should be in around 7:25. B)

LOL. I forgot about that. That was a different flight from the single VOR. The handwritten approach I was set with a 430 and HSI, and not much IMC, except at my destination. However, with botched headwind forecast and ATL pushing me further west than I had planned, I was pretty much committed to making that approach regardless of what the ceilings were.

I almost have the makings of a book. :D

BTDT!! Walldorff is a nice place to have a beer and a sandwich! While you guys are enjoying the north woods, my wife and I will be enjoying the Hastings area.

And for once I'm on the ground watching other people fly. Adams are getting a killer headwind en route to Ed's.

Meanwhile, from Florida we're enjoying a beautiful sunset. Y'all have fun at 6Y9!

I landed at FCM a little after 4 local. Decent VFR but windy. Clearing now so I think tomorrow's leg to 6Y9 will be as forecast. I'm thinkin' about a 10 am arrival but we'll see how it goes.

Any 6Y9 reports other than expect a wet field?

Why did Adam B fly down to Wings???? I thought Adam Z was taking a commercial flight north east?????????

Southern route was the way to go. planned canada route was really not looking good. lots of convective stuff. Actually worked out well. A2 flew in last night.

Are you 9D9 partiers gonna make it?

We will not be filing IFR from 9D9. Ryan and Jen already left this morning, and we will be heading to the airport shortly. Going to fly up the east side of lake michigan and find a decent spot to cross.

Looking a bit breezy all day. :( Cool, too, with a high of 55°F. Has anyone heard about field condition?

Brad says the conditions are good. Mom says for any of the intrepid die hards that make it, they can set up camp at our place, and we can put you inside shelter to get out of the wind and we can hang out where it is a bit warmer.

It's beautiful in South Beach and the Atlantic is bath water warm. Y'all have a good day. :D

71G will be departing MSN shortly after 10, landing somewhere after 1 PM Eastern. Just a day trip this time though.

As usual, I'm in Bellaire MI for the weekend. If the runway @ 6Y9 is solid I might come up for the day tomorrow. Who's actually going to be there then? Last time I tried that, everyone had gone home when I showed up.

I suspect that there may be someone at Camp Frederick, but maybe not at the airport. Don't think there will be many campers this year.

We need Ed, Liz, or the Adam(s)... anyone else?? to give us the party report! :) Wooo hooo... what's going on over there??

Well, the internet connectivity there is virtually nonexistent. I was hoping to hear from Kent after he got back from his day trip.

I'm back. ;)

Oh, you wanted to hear more? There were 9 airplanes I think (that's what Diz said). Wx was fine coming from southern WI, and I taught Pete the basics of the commercial maneuvers. We did some flying up high (up to 9500) where it was cold and we had a 40-knot headwind, and some down low below the scattered layer, where it was bumpy with hardly any headwind. It was windy in the UP, and after catching a rotor off the trees while trying to land from the right seat (which I'm still fairly new to), I let Pete land. Wouldn't have been difficult from the left seat.

It was coooooooold! Mainly due to the wind. But someone turned summer off on Friday!

After the picnic festivities were done, we headed over to the Freds' cabin and hung out. Pete and I left when everyone else went to Hoppy's. :( I had a good right-seat landing when we stopped for fuel at Clintonville ($3.71/gal). It was a good trip and it was great to see people who had come from so far - Clark and the Adams came from long distances! (800nm, 783nm, and 699nm respectively!)

Since the Prellwitzes, Scott Migaldi, and Barb Miller didn't make it, there is now *nobody* who has made it every year except the Freds.

They're now selling T-shirts that feature an awesome aerial picture of last year's fly-in that Diz took from Bruce's Seneca on final. I want one!

I was planning on coming but I caught a cold thursday.(I wish I wasn't such a good softball player, maybe I would have dropped the catch!)

I kept hoping it wouldn't be much but today I'm sitting here with squeaky noises emanating from my chest after each breath, so I decided to stay home and not share.

Barb
