    Flying near Santa Barbara

There's a possibility that I may be taking a job near Santa Barbara and moving to the area. I've lived in the Washington D.C. suburbs my entire life and don't know a whole lot about SoCal. There is a GA airport in Santa Inez (IZA) with a glider operation and another in Lompoc (LPC). I saw a...

What to see in Austin and Houston?

I've never set foot in Texas before. When I heard that a friend will be in Austin soon, I booked a flight out there on the airlines (don't have a return ticket, yet). We're going to rent a car and drive to Houston--and/or possibly Dallas--over a long weekend. That's about all we've figured out...

Minimum XC PIC time before starting Instrument training

Esteemed CFIIs: what is the minimum cross-country PIC time that you prefer a student to have before beginning instrument training? Right now I have only 15 hours XC PIC. I realize that I need at least 50 before taking the instrument practical test. I'll soon have the time available to fly...

    W99 Wave Camp

Today is day 3 of glider camp at Grant County Airport (W99) in Petersburg, WV. It has been lots of fun and a tremendous learning experience for a fledgling glider pilot. On Saturday, I had my first mountain wave encounter. We towed through rough rotor to 8000 ft. It was the sportiest tow...

    Snowmobile suit?

I'll soon be headed to glider camp at W99 near Petersburg, WV to get some mountain wave experience under my belt. Their wave window goes up to 23,000 feet, though it is going to be brutally cold in that unheated glider cockpit no matter how high I manage to climb. I'd much rather spend money...

    Passed my glider checkride

I took my glider add-on rating ride yesterday in the 97F heat. It felt like I was sitting in a microwave oven after closing the canopy of the K-21 on the runway. The lift kicked in after noon and I ran into a couple of thermals that indicated 6-8 knots up on the vario. I did a sloppy job of...

    Mountain Flying Training near Denver

I'll be visiting a friend in Denver during the last weekend of September. As a flatlander who's never set foot in Colorado before, I'm thinking about extending the trip to get some mountain flying training (Leadville is on my bucket list). According to Google, KAPA and Jeffco are both ~30...

    Washington DC SFRA Gates

Last Thursday, I made a lunch run from HEF to JGG (Williamsburg, VA). I exited the DC SFRA through the FLUKY gate, as I had done throughout my training, and flew this route. Would Potomac TRACON have allowed me to fly this course, provided I filed HEF to GRUBY? That would have shaved off...

    Temporary Airman...

Or so my certificate says. I passed my checkride this afternoon at KHEF/KHWY. I couldn't be happier (though the soft-field landings weren't my best work). This has been a long time coming. I've learned a lot from lurking here and will attest that Captain Ron's advice is good. Thanks.

Looking for CFI recommendation near Myrtle Beach or Brunswick Co, NC

In the beginning of February, I'll be spending about 3 weeks with my folks in Calabash, NC, and I'm looking for a CFI to fly with while I'm there. I'd appreciate any recommendations. I think Odell Williamson (60J) and Grand Strand (CRE) are the closest airports. Southport (SUT) and Conway (HYW)...

    First solo this morning

My CFI was gracious enough to film some of my first pattern solo this morning, and I thought I'd share: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2Li7yzVDmc It was a beautiful day at Manassas airport (KHEF): ~5 sm visibility is the best I've had in a while. There is plenty to criticize as those...

Charts now freely downloadable from the FAA

The notice on naco.faa.gov reads: I was able to download geo-referenced sectionals and terminal area charts gratis from aeronav.faa.gov. When I tried to do the same last month, I think the FAA was charging a small fee for sectional charts.
