    New Commercial standards question...

Are you saying the Commercial Airmen Certification Standards are supposed to come out in June? I haven't heard of any official date yet or seen any drafts... do you have a link?

    PPL Checkride Experience?

That's my understanding as well, the DPE has the discretion of not continuing the checkride to the flight portion if he thinks the oral isn't passable. I think I read that in the PTS/ACS...

Logging pic for ifr xc while training

Yes, you can log the cross country time. The CFII will be "acting" as PIC when on an IFR clearance but you can still log it under the sole manipulator regulation.

Pilot landed gear up with CFI on board

A pilot who is a private pilot lands on the runway gear up because he forgot to put down the gear while receiving dual instruction. He was flying a typical traffic pattern in a plane he owns and has many hours in. The pilot had a current flight review at the time but a discussion wasn't had to...

    Prop strike on Continental

Thanks all for the input and clarification, on this particular plane the prop did need to removed (and replaced), but it wasn't torn down, only a dial indicator/run-out test on the flange. It hit a tow bar upon startup.

    Prop strike on Continental

I've heard that a Continental doesn't require a tear down and inspection as a Lycoming does, but looking at Continental's Service Bulletin SB96-11B it looks like it requires it. Anyone know if this has changed since the past?

    Napa Depature Procedures

At Napa airport (KAPC), it looks like a typical clearance is to SGD (Scaggs Island VOR) then the filed route. Looking at the graphical ODP NAPAA it has you climb southbound on the R-165 radial until reaching 3,000, then back to SGD VOR, where you could proceed on course, possibly north on V87...

    Third Class Medical Reform

Would flight instructor's still need a 3rd class medical? I see it says "Cannot operate for compensation or hire" but I think that only applies to the pilot certificate and not when you're operating as a flight instructor? Also, if you're doing hood work with a student, will the requirement for...

    Training from a private runway

I have a student looking to obtain their Private Pilot and they have a dirt strip on their property with their own plane. I looked into my NAFI Avemco insurance and it doesn't cover it if it's not designated as an airport. Avemco said it will cover the owner as owned policies don't have this...

    Hangar Rash / Acceptable limits?

How much "hangar rash" is acceptable, especially on flight control surfaces or trim tabs? Does it mention in the service manual how much can be dinged/bent/twisted/etc? I'm also wondering if it's straightened, but you can still see where it was previously bent (it's not completely flat)...

    Tailwheel Student Logging of PIC

Why wouldn't he be able to? A private pilot, rated in category and class, being the sole manipulator of the controls...

    Tailwheel Student Logging of PIC

That's correct, that reg says that you can log it by being the "sole manipulator" if you're rated in category/class/type, but endorsements are only required to ACT as PIC.

    The road to CFI....

OP, you can try taking just a few lesson plans you have and teach those. Then once you're getting comfortable teaching those subjects, start adding more of your lesson plans. Also, as you teach each lesson you may find you can improve your lesson plan in some way, and the next time you teach it...

How the hell do I get out of Tracy, CA IFR?

Flying under Part 91 you aren't required to fly an ODP, although it is recommended (see below). You should definitely look at the ODP procedures for climb gradients, obstacles, etc. but you can also rely on radar vectors if it's available in the area or use sectionals and other data to determine...
