PPL solo X-country... am I allowed to plan my own route?

@azblackbird It does sound like your life is set up so that the flying you want to do IS doable. In life and business, enthusiasm is a powerful force that keeps things moving. But those qualities that bring success in business can play nasty tricks on you in the air if you are overconfident...

PPL solo X-country... am I allowed to plan my own route?

To the OP: I prefer the type of flying you aspire to. In the past 12 months I've flown Ireland to Sweden in a single engine fixed gear, through the Balkans, Alps(including mountain gliding, not in the past year though), Germany, Austria, Greek Islands, etc. I am not instrument rated so I know...

Viable airplane options for low time pilots?

1)35K most certainly can get you something "safe to fly" 2) yes, you should consider other aircraft! I never considered the model I now own (Socata Rallye--Morane Saulnier), but buying was one of the best decisions I made. I didn't buy a make or model; I bought a plane with certain...

Viable airplane options for low time pilots?

35K USD is sufficient for a good aircraft, including a well equipped Cherokee 180. The problem is avoiding the bad ones. I would not fixate on the model. Condition is much more important than model. If you know you want 180 HP (I did) consider any plane with that HP. Make sure it's a...

Would you fly with unknown noise on startup

I would not. I would figure out what the noise is. There are times I have flown with problems to a mechanic but only on advice of experience people and after figuring out exactly what the issue was (and that it wasn't going to cause a forced landing between me and the destination). Anomalies...

Can you rent a single piston for a week?

Yes, for two weeks and longer without daily minimums. But the way you do it is by becoming part of a small group an owner wants to rent to. Then he puts you on his insurance and off you go. I don't think it's so viable with flight school rentals because of daily minimums and the condition...

I got to fly a Mirage!

Sounds like fun! BTW did you ask his permission to post the pics? (Some people find it annoying when guests run out and post pics of social visits.) Just asking, he might not care.

Would you travel with your family?

Just give it some time. If you don't die in a plane wreck over the next couple of years , their assessment of the risks will adjust. Just never tell them about any mistakes you make. They need to sense that everything goes smoothly in the air because you're careful and competent.

Would you travel with your family?

Yes. However, I am more cautious with passengers than when alone. I do overwater stretches solo. I will fly in the mountains with family (the beauty worth the added risk).

    Bellingham Belle........????Who

Much prettier in the second picture. Looking at the hands in the first, can't help thinking she would have been a good pianist.

    Where's my motivation?....

It may be a form of financial self-preservation. My interest wanes when my finances go south. Wanting to fly is a clear leading indicator that things are looking up. So it could be you're feeling stress in other areas and your motivation has gone because you have to focus on career/income...

    Cirrus for a student pilot?!

I've used a 150HP Cessna to fly Frankfurt-Rome on multiple occasions. Also, Riga-Frankfurt; Paris-Frankfurt; Bavaria-Umbria. All over Germany, France, the Baltic and Italy. Stop for fuel along the way at grass fields with a restaurant. it's a wonderful way to travel. An Archer is absolutely...

    Cirrus for a student pilot?!

Why not continue teaching the kid to fly the SR22? Just insist that he train at least 3 times a week and he'll get it quickly enough. You said he already handles it well. I think it's silly to trade down to an SR20. I think people have gotten over-used to the idea that you start out on...

    Cirrus for a student pilot?!

How much do the people weigh? You could get an upgraded older C 182 in the 50-100K range & add a parachute (although that might put you under UL target). You could probably even get decent retractable at the upper end of your price range. Or a C210.
