Love At First Sight

Have they said why it's taking so long? I've had similar transactions take place in under an hour. If I were in your shoes and they cost me another three-fifty, I'd seriously have to consider closing my account with them.

I've gone past the vice presidential level.

The trouble lies with some middle-man bank that's having computer problems, supposedly.

That's code for "some dumb mother-flipper effed up doing their job", where I come from.

Or they sent it as an ACH instead of a wire...

Whatever. Banks are only business that is even more annoying than dealing with the government.

My seller is unhappy. My pilot is unhappy. I am furious, and needlessly out a day's work (I have done NOTHING but deal with this for the last six hours), plus another $350+ to Tom.

And, I have NO recourse. Just like our government. :banghead:

Financial "get-there-itis" setting in?

Seriously, I understand how incredibly frustrating that can be.

And FINALLY N14EG has departed Vermont!

Next stop -- Ohio. He is really going to be up against daylight. I doubt he will make it to MSP tonight before dark

It is EXTREMELY strange to watch (on Flightaware) as a plane I've never seen is being flown by a man I've never met, from an airport I've never been to --and I own it!

Aviation is bizarre. And cool.

Whatever.

Actually, it's important.

Wire goes bank-bank (usually) direct, meaning it's faster. But it costs more. ACH is handled through an intermediary clearing house, so it takes longer (up to next banking day). It's also much cheaper.

Here's an explaination: http://www.depositaccounts.com/blog/difference-between-wire-transfer-and-ach.html

Many places & people will default to ACH transfers to save a few bucks.... without realizing that it takes longer. Did you ask specifically for a wire, or did you just say "send money"?

Yeah, they wired it. 4.5 hours later, it finally arrived where it was supposed to go.

Turns out that First Bank Midwest is too small to have a direct connection to the Fed -- so when they wire money it first goes to a place called "People's Bank", wherever that is.

"People's Bank" was having "computer problems" that slowed all wires to a crawl. I don't buy it for a minute -- but that's the explanation my banker gave me.

I've known her since 1998. This is our third aircraft loan with her. When she says "I've never seen a wire take this long'", I believe her.

I hope Tom makes it to MSP safely. Watching his progress on Flightaware, as he battles the headwinds (that were much lower this morning -- when he was supposed to depart.).

Congrats man, sounds like the pia part is over and now you are just waiting for christmas morning.

When is he due to land?

When we bought our 172 up in Maine, we opened an account at the same bank the seller used and transferred funds there ahead of time. After we inspected and flew the plane and accepted the deal, we walked across the street to the sellers bank and transferred the money from our account to his, and had the bank notarize the bill of sale. Took all of 20 minutes, no hassle. We waited about a week to make sure all the paper had cleared, and then closed the account since we no longer had any use for it.

Flying it back home to Texas was an absolute blast! :goofy:

Good luck! hope the transaction goes smooth!

I know, rudder pedals and all, but seeing that northerly track right now on FlightAware, all I can think of is the line from Planes, Trains & Automobiles:

You're going the wrong way!

Very jealous, I am, of the Honeck family. Yes, family. There is a particular young lad who can't wait to visit home, methinks.

He's going over *the lake*!!!! :hairraise::hairraise::D

If you think wires are difficult between among US banks, try it with Latin American banks. Then try to figure out how to satisfy the new "know your customer" rules being invoked by escrow company banks. :mad2::mad2:

Don't get me started. Chinese banking practices will be the death of me. Incredibly restrictive and bureaucratic...

Nicely done!

We're following a faster pace than I ever expected, but I'm loving life - First date to proposal was only about 10 months and a few days, but it'll be 13 months of engagement before we're married. Aiming for a house by September of 2014 and first kid by April 2016. :)

Don't plan the kid. Trust me on this. I've watched friends do that and all it does is add tons of stress. Honestly, probably the reason we ended up with a kid quikly was that we didn't try to.

Just do the practice thing until you get it right. ;)

Where should he go for dual?

Yup, my RV Guru (Tom Berge) is a "one-stop shop", providing purchasing advice, evaluation/prebuy inspections, delivery AND transition training.

I can heartily recommend Tom to anyone making the jump into the strange, new world of experimental planes. He is extremely thorough, with a scientific mind and meticulous nature. With over 3000 hours in RVs, and having built dozens of them, he has forgotten more about RVs than I will ever know.

As my seller said, after we closed the deal: "That was as close to an MRI for airplanes as you can get.". :D

When you're dealing with planes that were built in someone's basement, that's the kind of guy you want evaluating things.

Tom helped a student of mine acquire his RV-9A, did the transition training AND helped him do a ton of mods to meet his needs. He's definitely as good as it gets in the RV world.

Something about that whole scenario sounds scary to me. I would have to go with him and see the plane myself then fly back with him for the transition training.

Congrats on the purchase! Looking forward to seeing pictures.

I received a cryptic text message saying "I'm not using Flight Following".

My guess is he sent that so we didn't freak out when we saw his track, and his projected track. I bet he went around the bottom of Lake Michigan, and then Chicago cut him loose from FF. Used to happen to us all the time.

Introducing "Amelia", N14EG.

She's our gorgeous RV-8A, and she's safely on the ground in Crystal, MN, after an epic, 6.5 hour "first flight" cross-country from the seller's 'drome in Vermont.

Why MN, when we are in TX? We're having a few mods made to her, including:

- Quick-adjust front rudder pedals
- Back cockpit rudder pedals
- Back cockpit throttle

In a week or so, Tom will fly her down to the island, and we will FINALLY get to see our beautiful little wildcat... :D

Very nice, Jay. Very nice.
Congratulations.

Where should he go for dual?

I've heard that various outfits on the outskirts of Vegas offer dual with highly experienced instructors.

Wow, man, she's beautiful. Almost too pretty to fly, thought I'm sure that won't stop you.;) Congratulations. I learned a lot reading your posts.

What does the back normally have? Just a stick?

Whatever the builder decides is appropriate. I've seen them with nothing but a seat in back and I've seen them with a full IFR panel for the back seat, and everything in between. The joy of EAB - you can do it like you want.

Gorgeous plane, Jay! That thing looks fast just sitting on the ramp! I really love the -8's. We ALMOST build an 8 instead of the 7A, but my mom put the kabosh to staring at the back of my dad's head on xc flights.

Looks like it has the 'old' style wing-tips and rudder. How many hours does it have on it so far?

Does it have the new nosewheel fork? If not, I would suggest looking at having it done while it's being worked on with the rudder pedals, etc.

The $50,000 question is.............................

Will Jay and Mary park it in Homebuilt camping or the North 40..:dunno:;)

As much as I love flying the cub, I find passengers are only entertained for the first 30 minutes in the plane. Once the coolness of the vintage aircraft wears off, its just kinda loud and slow. In a side-by side, its easier for me to let them fly etc...

She's got 300+ hours on her.

It's the original Van's nose wheel design. We are pondering whether to do the fork mod, or just upgrade the axle, which supposedly addresses the problem.

Oh, the North 40. After all these years, that's our home.

The stick is almost always in back. Many -8s have the rudder pedal extensions. Some have the throttle we are putting in.

With both of us pilots, we want full dual controls. Unfortunately there is no way to get brakes in the back, but at least it will be flyable from the back.
