I'm nearing the point where I need a BFR at the end of the month, looking at 61.56 I don't see a requirement that the flight time be done as PIC. Does that mean that if I'm working on my C/AMEL my instructor can do my BFR in a BE-76 or would I still need them to do an hour in the air with me in the PA-24?

You can do the BFR in the Dutchess.

When is your c/amel checkride? The successful ride will negate the need for the BFR.

Assuming you already have you P/AMEL, then yes he can.

It might not be until November which is the problem. No P/AMEL yet. I don't see the part where it specifies that you have to be certificated in the category or class though

Why would the OP need to be an PPMEL?

    61.56 (c):

    (c) Except as provided in paragraphs (d), (e), and (g) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command of an aircraft unless, since the beginning of the 24th calendar month before the month in which that pilot acts as pilot in command, that person has—

I always took paragraph d to cover that...

    (d) A person who has, within the period specified in paragraph (c) of this section, passed a pilot proficiency check conducted by an examiner, an approved pilot check airman, or a U.S. Armed Force, for a pilot certificate, rating, or operating privilege need not accomplish the flight review required by this section.

    So, no flight review required.

Correct, if he passes his commerical checkride, it will quality for his flight review, But the instructor can not sign off the flight review, if he is not rated in the aircraft.

or can you pound out your ME checkride, which takes away the need for a bfr entirely

But the flight review is not needed if he was taking (and pass) his C/AMEL ride before the end of the month, or wasn't going to fly on his own before the ride.

IF he gets it, yes. He's already stated it's doubtful until Nov. that he would finish.

Didn't want to start another thread but...I completed my first BFR today. Hopefully an instrument checkride in the future will push it back next time.
