Yes you heard their names correctly. MUST WATCH!

I laughed my racist ass off. At all of it.

I particularly like the NTSB's explanation. That's even funnier still....

The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.

Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.

I can see it plain as day.

"Hello, this is XYZ news, can you release the names of the pilots in the accident?"

"I sure can!!!!" :stirpot:

In regards to the NTSB thing... the old adage that you get exactly what you pay for holds true for employees as well as products. Interns probably shouldn't be answering your phones...

Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.

And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, the intern exceeded his authority.

CNN was reporting this morning that Asiana wants to sue the NTSB and KTVU on this. Of course, not only is this likely to be a US PR disaster, it isn't going to work.

First, they'll find it rather difficult suing the NTSB.
Second, media is given a bit more latitude than even a normal person with regard to libel defense. In addition to making it intentionally or recklessly false (which you'd have a hard time proving here), you'd have to show actual (not just alleged) malice on the stations part in making such statement.
Third, they'd have to show some direct damage. That's going to be hard to show additional damage beyond the fact what was incurred by their pilots slamming the aircraft short of the runway.

Asiana needs to convert the legal dept funds to the internal pilot training dept.

Jus sayin..;)

Yeah, they must be taking PR help from the Canadian petroleum company involved in the Quebec disaster.

Talk of a suit is weak attempt by Asiana at a diversion to get the airheads something else to talk about besides pilot error. Can't wait for KTVU to announce Asiana has hired the firm of Dewey, Cheatem and Howe to file the suit after checking with the SF Bay Bar Council for the proper spelling. :rolleyes2:

Cheers

The fact that the station confirmed the story with NTSB shows an absence of actual malice. That will be a defense against defamation claims. I would expect the plaintiff's attorneys to raise the claim that the station "should have known better", at which the station will indicate that it took reasonable actions to confirm the story. The station will be supported by First Amendment & trade organizations.

The government is hard to sue. I sure wouldn't want to be the intern who "exceeded authority", but unless the intern or someone at NTSB made the story up (as opposed to confirming), I think the NTSB will skate.

But it will cost lawyer's fees.

Would the country have laughed the way it did if it joke names git pinned on an all black or all female crew? I really don't care about some aggrieved clas, just pointing out the hypocrisy of the nation. And the hamster wheel spinning needed so folks can laugh at a racist joke then go on believing they ain't like those crude bigots that laugh at racist jokes. If you are going to laugh at racist jokes at least be man enough to admit racist jokes can be funny and most sterotypes are based on observed truths.

There is no hypocrisy. The crew screwed up in a disastrous way, and it's only people with your mindset who are inserting race into the crew's mistakes. The crew could have been white American males with false American names attributed to them, and the intent nor appropriateness would have been no different.

There have been some suggestions that cultural issues surrounding training or CRM could have played a role in the accident, and those are things that we do not yet know for certain. However, we do know that cultural issues have played a part in accidents and CRM challenges in the past, and if they played a role in this accident, that is something that Asiana will need to address in order to ensure that such issues do not compromise safety of flight.

I must have missed the jokes with corrupted names after the Colgan and AF 447 crashes, among other crashes involving white pilots. It shouldn't be that hard to find CFIT accidents involving white pilots, so if there is only humor and no underlying racial component involved, it shouldn't be too hard to find jokes that make fun of their names.

You won't...because, of course white names don't lend themselves as well to that sort of humor.

I agree that the joke names are racist, but there is a difference in someone using unacceptably off-color jokes to blaming the crash on race.

Let's not confuse the two.

One was a bad joke in poor taste. In the other thread the issue was allegations that cultural differences may have been a contributing factor.

Really? There are no phonetic jokes in other languages?

English-speaking people won't think of them, but why aren't there phonetic jokes in other langauges. For example, the Chevy Nova was not a popular car in hispanic countries.

Things take a turn for the bizarre. FedGov's finest:

NTSB statement on erroneous confirmation of crew names

The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today's incident.

Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.

This makes it all the more hilarious! I guess the station gets credit for confirming their source, so alleviates some of their guilt. But some editor somewhere should have said, "Wait a minutes....something doesn't smell right here!"

Yeah, because my name never got rhymed with anything ever. Nor was it ever preceded by "special."

Get a ****ing life, and quit being such a sniveling, whiny man-***** that's afraid of laughing.

Here. Read up on "white" names.

Laugh all you want. If you don't admit it is racist you are an ignorant racist, which is worse then the openly racist KKK folks.

I think it was funny as hell , not because I'm racist , because I don't walk around with a stick up my ass

This was one of those jokes that was racist, in awful taste, and also funny. It lampooned both the haplessness of the pilots and the sheer stupidity of the repor^H^H^H^H^H prompter readers for having fallen for it. I laughed and felt guilty for laughing at the same time.

Doesn't take away one iota from how sorry I feel for the victims. Tragedies like this bring out conflicting emotions. It's part of being human.

I laughed at it, not because of the names. I thought the names weren't that funny. What was hilarious was the news station was so hellbent on being the first to report the names they didn't bother to really make any effort. I would have laughed just as much at the news station if the names had been Krashenbern, Tyreskamoff, and Scrapinbelle.

If you want "white racist" names, here's a few from the sports world, although I think the football playuer was actually black:

Peter LaCock (baseball)
Rusty Kuntz (baseball)
Harry Colon (football)
and in a trade between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners 2 years ago...
Charlie Furbush, and Doug Fister, sophomorically referred to as the Fister-Furbush trade.

"unracist" enough for you?

Pet peeve of mine:

Racist implies that you believe in a genetic superiority of one race over another. I don't see how a joke name implies that.

Joke names might imply bigotry (dislike, hate, or intolerance) or even prejudice (preconceived notions), but not racism.

The level of human guilt and "I'm better than you, because I'm more PC than you." is sickening in this thread...

There used to be a father son dentist team in Springield, Mo..

Dick Moist

Dick Moist II

Yes, in the phone book it was Moist, Dick.

Asiana, really? You just dumped an airplane full of passengers on to 28L at SFO and you are getting worked up over a stupid and incredibly insensitive yet creatively funny practical joke?

So how is that damage to reputation claim going to go here?
"We just killed three people, paralyzed three and seriously injured 60 more with a pilot who inexplicably hamburgered an approach he should be able to do easily" - and the posting of the names Sum Ting Wong, and Ho Lee Fuk are going to irreparably damage your company's reputation? Seriously now.

You might want to rethink that whole litigation thing. . . .

:yeahthat:

But what do I know. I'm just a black guy and apparently, the subject of a pretty racist electronic color code mnemonic.

Not familiar with that one.

But Violet Gives Willingly? ;)

That's how the clean one I know ends before the tolerance bands (see below). I won't quote the not so clean one about Batman on this family friendly board.

For silver and gold.

Get Some Now (Gold, Silver, None) for the tolerance bands.

One of GM's mistakes. No va isn't exactly the message you want to send about a car. :D

The Dachau concentration camp was sickening.
The Nanking Massacre was sickening.
The Soviet Gulag was sickening.
Atrocities too numerous to list here are sickening.

But I haven't read anything anyone has posted here that rates the use of the word "sickening."

Against my better judgement I decided to post my thoughts about the prank. I pretty much anticipated all the counter-arguments and insults that would result. I only decided to post to let silent lurkers know that not everyone laughing should be given an automatic pass. Life is short and I'm not getting any younger, so it is modestly satisfying to take the occasional public stand against boorish stupidity.

Another similar blooper was a local TV station's plugging their news anchor with a photo and the word "Mort."

His name was Mort Crim.

But we are just across the river from Canada. :D

My 8th grade social studies teacher's name was Mr. Dich.

pronounced "dick"

Seriously, that is how it was pronounced.

I can't imagine teaching that grade with that name though, but he did.

I'm sure they were.

Good for you. This is the internet. What you rate as worthy is debatable.

Did I address you specifically? I don't remember addressing you. I don't know who you're talking to in that last part....

I give as good as I get com-padre.

You quoted me, scolded me, and now throw up a Non-sequitur. Way to go.

POST FAIL.

Holy hell, did anyone watch Colbert Report tonight? Referring to the racism and the names, said it was racist because those were Chinese names, not Korean names. Less racist would be Ho Yo Lan Dis Tang?

Pure gold.

Wow. Mort Crim is still working? He passed through Chicago decades ago.

Ahhh love that sentence. That's pretty close to my motto lately. Could remove "modestly", "occasional" and "boorish" and it's closer. ;)
