Because we love it. There is no other explanation.

It's unGodly expensive, you can't find two out of ten people who will fly with you in that 'death trap.' And sometimes I scare myself and wonder "wtf am I doing? a person could get killed doing this!" It's gotta be a passion. Or sickness.

Sometimes I wish I had bought a really nice boat... I'd be a lot more popular.

I'd be a lot more popular if I'd bought hookers-n-blow instead of an airplane...but I didn't...

My airplane is my therapist.

I had that conversation with my CFI.

After a flight I mentioned to my daughter, "We just spent two hours flying. It felt like 10 minutes." She thought about it and said, "Yeah, I completely put everything else out of my head."

Because I get paid for it.

I took a leave of absence from the air ambulance and am now in Homer, Alaska flying tourist out to look at bears. We land on the beach during low tides and watch the bears in their natural habitat. Some days push the 14 hour duty day.

I really get paid for this....

Put me down as another who doesn't do well at a desk job and flies for a living instead.

I do it for the challenge and the rarity. Both things I love. But, being honest, flying through the air is pretty cool.

It is our superpower. We are the star of our own superhero movie each time out.:)

I fly because there is nothing else in the world quite like it and it's amazingly beautiful and because life is hardly worth living unless it's full of experiences.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

— John Gillespie Magee, Jr

I fly because the authorities take a dim view of taxiing my plane from airport to airport.

Because I can get away from everything when I'm up in the air. No work calls. I do consulting work and for the past three years I used my plane for traveling back and forth to my job. About a month ago I took on a new contract that is only 23 miles from home so I won't be using the plane to commute for a while. I always got a kick out of this too:

When did charles say that? Was it before or after he had to bail out twice , each time due to bad weather at night while flying the mail. Then there's my uncle, recently deceased, who volunteered as a bombardier on a B24 as he was frightened of being in the infantry. Eventually he was shot down over polesti, bailed out, one of two in his crew to survive, POW, then went on to fly in RB50s, B47s, and B52s. He needed a job had four kids. Also deceased recently, Bob, a buddy who tired of putting right front fenders on ford trucks, went to night school, 2 year college, enlisted in naval air, flew P2Vs out of Brunswick, Thule, etc. Flew 30 years with eastern airlines, finally captain on 1011. Also needed a job. Never flew after he retired. All kinds of reasons why we fly.

Why do we fly? For the same reasons that my dog licks his Clinton:

1. It feels good

2. We can

Boats are expensive and you will end up doing all the work.

I fly for the challenge, solitude, and because I can!

Get a model 12 and you will be more popular :-)
Like my son says, every time a plane flies over he looks up. Most the time he says "Just a boring Cessna"
