Vary small cockpit, already equipped with a Garmin 550 Area.

Or would you upgrade to the iPad and Fore-flight?

How fast, how far, and how high you going to be flying it??

Poking holes in clouds or just sunshine days?

An iPad takes up a lot of space in a small cockpit, and there never seems to be a place that doesn't block instruments, except maybe on your knee. Can you wear a kneeboard in this airplane?

Minis are better, but the issues are still there.

Yep I would swap in a heartbeat because Jepp updates for the Garmin are ~$400/yr. as opposed to an ipad with Garmin pilot for about $80 per year with obstacles, terrain, safe taxi, synthetic vision, etc.....

wanted to make you think about it, you always made us think.

waiting for your input on the rattlecan thread.

I've decided that I will limit my input on threads like that. When I read posts like that I tend to shake my head and that makes me dizzy. :)

I have a stratus with the I pad to replace a 496. Works great for me have tight cockpit.

iPad on the panel?

I've been able to just have mine on my lap in all sorts of cockpits, never really considered it part of the aircraft as much as part of the pilot, more like a headset, just get a mini cellular in a soft case.

Tom, give us a pic of the panel in that (extremely cool) bird.

The 550 is a good, solid device, but long-term, I'd likely try for an iPad Mini, using ADS-B, so you get weather and traffic in the bargain - maybe even a backup horizon.

There is a photo in the ebay ad Tom linked. Not much panel space at all (the photo doesn't show the Garmin).

I think the only way you'd be able to do an ipad is the kneeboard strap.

There's one in the auction:

Being a experimental you could do much better in that cockpit. Replace all of those engine instruments and most of that other stuff with a dynon Skyview, just leave a small backup altimeter and airspeed indicator, compass.

I'd also get the remote transponder and radio add ons for the dynon, you could really make huge improvements on maximizing that real estate.

An iPad mini or iPhone using an ADHRS and pilot app is far more capable than an Aera and is easier to use. I have an iPad mini but more often than not I just use my iPhone 6+. In my case the GDL39-3D is what makes the app better than the Aera. My project Cub will gave a Garmin G3X but I'll still make room for the mini or the iPhone, depending on how much space I have. In the Cessna I attached an Otter Box belt clip to the yoke using velcro. I snap the phone in and off I go. I prefer it to the mini for most flights.

I have a Aera 500 in my RV-4. I use it for Mac tools (simulated) HSI, distances, times, etc. I use iPad mini for charts, freqs, airport dictators, etc. it is usually on my left leg or laying on console under legs.

RV also has VOR which I seldom use.

This space intentional left blank.

That's awesome! And that price, man! Are you going to keep it?

That's undetermined ? It's coming home as a project, we will see what happens after that, It's some thing different, and I have always like the concept.

due to the sellers work schedule I will not pick up the project until the 13th of Feb. It is way way up on Vancouver Island. (Port McNiel BC) and am hoping the Canadian dollar tanks in the mean time.

Would you like to finance that for me? I'm not spending that much on any project, then try to sell it.

Just depends on your mission, or your target demographic for selling it.

If you're just semi local area straight VFR ops, you don't even need a GPS, leave it as is.

For what you're in the plane for I think a semi basic Skyview install would be great, she would be a instrument ship and something I wouldn't have a issue taking from coast to coast, plus a buyer will pay a more for a thought out and capabilbe ship, just dump a basic Skyview in, spruce up the cosmetics, maybe add a starter and you got a real plane.

With a few improvements that would be a great little commuter, one of my buddies just got a experimental like that for a work commuter.

As she sits I wouldn't pay too much for a very home built looking plane, you still got a hell of a deal, but if you're going to flip it, cosmetic stuff and a redo of that panel and starter would be in order IMO. Another thought is to advertise her as a built to order and have the customer pay for the avionics etc directly.

Ether way, sweet deal Tom, look forward to hearing how she shakes down once you pick her up

I'll even lend you my Daniels AFM8 machined contact crimper and automatic wire stripper Tom. You'll be fabricating radio harnesses in no time.

You know very well there is no buyer going to pay you what it costs to buy and install one of them.

I appreciate the offer, buy borrowing tools is a good way to loose friends. besides If I broke it, then I'd have buy you a new one, If I buy one I'll simply keep it, not the broken one

For the most part you're right, especially in a certified plane, but in that little experimental of yours and for the price of experimental avionics, you might be able to make a really polished plane and still have a better profit margin.

Not owning a experimental I'm not sure of all the options out there, I'd bet you could get similar glass for even less.

If I were you I'd advertise her as a built to spec, you'll probably end up selling her with glass, a AP, swooshy new type paint job, add standard markup, take a deposit and deliver a real head turner, providing great word of mouth marketing for you and demonstrating what you can do.

I'd like to hear more about the Vari-Eze.

2 seater right? I thought they had some big spar corrosion problem that was really tough to inspect. I did some research on them because they are cheap and fast.

I would keep the area as primary nav. They are easy to use and easy to fly by. I like how they overlay a compass card on the moving map with a magenta bug for your heading to a waypoint.

Put the ipad mini on my knee with a strap mount if there is nowhere else for it.

 Who said we were friends? kidding.

I tell ya what. You can find these on ebay all the time. The most frequent tool used is a DMC AFM8 crimper with the K42 positioner. Think I have less than $150 in mine used. The second one is a Ideal automatic wire stripper I think I gave $50 for band new.

Gotta remember the top of the market is 30k and you must have a really good one with all the goodies to get that.

it may be cheaper than you think. i have seen some great deals on used dynons pulled for a touch screen update at a good price. new the set up is only about 10k and the install is simple.
