What did you do today?

Races from one end of the farm to the other with a load full of tools whenever something breaks.

Can't stand sitting around, I imagine the yacht/supermodel thing would get boring after about five minutes.

If you're just sitting around with a supermodel, I think I see the root of your problem....

Spent the morning at the airport with a group of pilots, having coffee and donuts and conversation

about 3,000 of them were mountain and/or windy 2-lane roads.
Windy, windy, or both? ;)

We just got back from a trip with a lot of wind…and yes, it’s me doing the driving. My wife complains that it’s too big and she can’t drive it, but downsizing isn’t an option either. Of course, we’re only 31 feet, and pulling a small pickup.

Went to the monthly lunch with a group of people I used to work with back in the day. We sit around and after a few rounds of “how great we were”, conversation is about just about anything.

Flew to Central County Airport near Iola, Wisconsin for the Friday lunch. First time in years. They prepared 250 pieces of fried chicken and ran out... had to grill hamburgers for the overflow crowd. I am trying to answer why I don't go there more often. It is less than 40 miles and attended by dozens of small plane pilots every week from all over the state.

Took the motosickle out for a couple of hours this morning. I’m waaaay out of practice.

Now watching the brave young lads from Ga Tech do battle against an uncouth horde from a distant land called “Syracuse.”

not a great start (in the first minute), eh?

Is there a story behind this.??

And does it involve wet drums.??
Keeper on the posi came from together and got caught in between the ring and pinion gears. Decided to just do an axle swap with a used axle. Used axle has an immaculate ring and pinion. But decided to replace the drums and shoes as well as axle seals while I'm at it.

Just getting the existing drums off to drop the axle was a pain. Never seen an adjuster backed out so far to the point it was impossible to adjust them back in. IMG_2257.jpegIMG_2253.jpeg

And just for laughs... Here's the original g80 locker, affectionately known as the gov bomb and why I went to a posi to begin with.

And no I wasn't doing burn outs. Pull out from work and had to get on it due to traffic. Was on the gravel side of the driveway. As soon as the left sides hit pavement, the right sides were still spinning. Blowed her up.

Which is why I always stuck with the Ford 9 inch, even though I am a die hard Chevy man.!!

Do you add the limited slip lube to the G-80.??

For whatever reason this was an oddball 3.08 rear with the 8.6" axle. The 9.5 is much better.

No limited slip in the g80. But did have it in the posi.

Yesterday: Dropped my parachute off for a long overdue repack, stopped for mutton barbecue on the way home.
Parked at a "Jet Center" to use the crew car (no parking fee, bought a little fuel but not required). First time being marshalled in years.
I like to think my tired old airplane looked pretty good on the line with a Mirage and a couple of Cirrus jets. Bet I had more fun flying home. :)

Nauga,
and the orange wand shuffle

Dropped mine off on Monday for a repack that wasn't due for 4 more days.

Had to be current for the Sebring IAC contest next weekend. They check during registration.

Nice! Iola is a slice of aviation heaven. I haven't been in far too long myself.

I'm always really embarrassed to be bringing a certified metal plane with a nosewheel! Some amazing birds show up there. One of my favorites is an open cockpit Waco biplane that has painted next to the passenger hole "Air conditioned for your comfort!"

I turned on the central heat yesterday. Works, no CO according to my CO sniffer.

Today I will close up the swamp cooler.

If y'all don't hear from me for a couple weeks then that means I fell off the roof.

Again...

This actually happened Friday, but I've been super busy. This is a "what I did yesterday" post, if I was posting this yesterday.

I bought myself something. I'm in my mid forties and getting back into a very physically demanding sport that I have not participated in since I was 30. My kid is now very interested in mx, and I've missed riding the entire past 15 years.

Today will actually be spent disassembling it, greasing and lubricating everything the dealer tech may not have greased and lubed, setting sag and centering suspension settings as a starting place for adjustments at the track, checking torque on pretty much everything that requires a proper torque.

While doing all of that I will be thinking on which brand and style of knee brace I will buy, because I will surely be needing two, very soon. Possibly a kidney belt.

Here is my child, just a speck on our local track. It was probably this moment that I decided to get back out there. Or, it was when his bike died way up in the top right of that pic and I had to WALK all the way over there to start it.

Any of you are familiar with the current class of MX bikes might be wondering why I picked a such a slow bike. Well, it probably will not feel very slow to someone that past his prime long ago. I picked the Suzuki because my last bike was an amazing 2003 RM250, two stroke. The Suzuki was on sale, damn near 30% off msrp. Suzuki hasn't updated their MX bike design since 2018, so it's slow and not very competitive with the rest of brands much newer engine designs, but they are probably on the top of the list in reliability and durability. Which is fine, racing isn't my goal, just being out there with my kid as much as I can is my goal.

Upside is, I now work from home. If I eff myself up, It's not as big a deal as it was so long ago. I can roll my butt over to the computer and pay the bills, and walmart will bring groceries to our door. That wasn't the case in my 20s. If I got hurt, Losing my house and starving were very real possibilities. Will that embolden me out there, or will I play it safe?

Watch out for trash cans while you're at it.

I replaced a wall cabinet in the garage with a 6' floor standing cabinet, then stacked the wall cabinet on top of it for good measure, sold the short shelf unit that was collecting junk in that spot (along with some Harley Twin Cam special tools I discovered), and freed up about another 15-20 square feet of garage floor space to work in. Every little bit helps.

I've done 3 of 5 things on my todo list today, so far. well, technically 3 of 7 things but I don't consider "watch the giants lose again" and "watch the rangers lose again" actual things to do stfu theisen.

It's been said, and I can confirm it to be true, that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow. I'm way too much of a chicken to ride any motorcycle fast, so I don't know if the same saying is true of bikes, but either way you slice it you're a braver guy than me.

Spent yesterday welding up a trellis for a climbing plant only to have my wife respond with, "that's not what I was thinking"
Then shortly thereafter, my son's parking brake failed in his 1st Gen Dodge, sending it over an embankment where it totaled itself. It only took us about an hour getting it to a point where a wrecker could reach it and pull it the rest of the way. 1000022910.jpg

Doing what you do best. :)

Yesterday was a full day. Our EAA Chapter flew 45+ kids at the last Young Eagles Rally of the year. As the ground communications weenie and taxi/parking director for 13 planes, I felt like a Yellow Shirt on a Carrier.

After that, Homecoming at University of Cincinnati where I went to the somewhat raucous pregame Engineering Tent Party (no, really) before watching UC give a sound thrashing to Baylor.

Finally made it home about 2100 and tried flight planning a trip later this week. Fells asleep with finger on ForeFlight on the iPad and decided the resulting route needs attention today.

I was gonna eat today...then I watched the Skattebo injury replay.

If you haven't seen it, skip it.
