Is it legal to install this device on my panel with all the options? I don't want to remove anything currently installed. I know I can't hook it into the certified plumbing, but could new plumbing be installed legally, and without much work?

So long as it's not a permanent mount device as they say, yes. Just like people mounting iPads, etc. in the panel.

That is the key to the issue, what defines, "install", understand that, and you will realize you can have any avionics you want, you just can't have them for primary required. To have them as augmenting information is not a problem. The trick is in how you physically affix them in place.

This is kinda a PITA part to it, but with just a bit of creativity, and I recommend real Velcro brand products, (I have seen duct tape as well) it is doable. Hopefully eventually someone will get around to the PT 23 rewrite with Experimental Non Commercial added so we can stop playing this game and get the good affordable avionics available to GA retrofit. If they want everyone upgraded by 2020, they need to get that done.

Ram mounts make just about any type of device to mount portable avionics, also Velcro does a wonderful job. I also would hope someone will get the PT 23 rewrite done ,have a few ideas for my certified Liberty xl2.

For some of the functionality provided by the GRT device mentioned in the OP, I read from the specs it needs connection to various permanent systems on the aircraft. It even ,mentioned somewhere in a manual I browsed today connection to the pitot static system**. Is is still a truly portable device?

**Looking for the reference and will provide when found.

Found it.... From the install, setup, user manual. http://www.grtavionics.com/Mini-X manual - September 2015.pdf

1.3 Mini System Requirements
The Mini utilizes the following systems for operation:
ü Aircraft Power (12- or 28-volt system) - 0.25 Amp current draw at full brightness
ü Pitot/static connection for flight instrumentation
ü Built-in GPS with a remote “puck” antenna which must be within view of the sky at all times.
üOptional remote magnetometer is required for magnetic heading information and AHRS independent of GPS track– see Section 1.4 for more information

This is primarily what I was wondering. I don't think you could hook into the certified system, but could you easily create another system to use with this. I have an email into my Avionics shop, but they typically like to push whatever is the most expensive solution to any problem, so they'll likely balk at this and tell me to install $20,000 worth of electronics.

I believe there are shops in the Ft. Worth area that would install this box....but beware, not all FSDOs are created equal.:mad2:

Nothing says you can't have a second system.

I've had my eye on the mini GA for a while, sweet piece of hardware IMHO

I know of a very early model Cessna with an AVMAP PFD/GPS/EFIS installed in a removable mount. It's quite nice and useful, and not permanently attached. Pretty slick.

It would be pretty sweet if someone created a 3D printer file for an Airgizmo style dock for the G3X.
