Todays Music Rant

I like that chart.
It put Zepplin, AC/DC, and Van Halen n the rock category

According to that chart I am fond of
Thrash Metal
Alternative
Groove

It is missing Slipknot and Mudvayne.

C'mon Metal ballads were the best of the 80's music. Did those bands do those willingly or did the labels force them?

Yes ever band had to have 1 ballad

And what the hell is with instrumentals?
"Hey guys, lets write most of a song"

Hard rock probably, although at the time might have been called metal as well.

No doubt Eddie VanHalen forever changed what was expected of a hard rock/metal guitarist when he came on the scene. The guy changed rock and roll.

Ugh get KISS off that chart.
They aren't a band, they are a commercial for a circus or something.

I've been listening to the crap out of this band lately:

Another band from the lead singer of Cradle of Filth.

They even did a cover of Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning (for us old folk that remember the 80's):

-Brian

The 2nd one sounds like Sepultura's cover of Motorhead's Orgasmatron

If you haven't already, you gotta check out Gojira. Some of the finest groove metal ever made IMO. I see them whenever they come to SF (last time with Mastodon).

Trying to get to the Warfield in December to see Opeth

Gojira is great. Love Mastodon as well. Listening to their new album right now!

A band along different lines I have been really listening to is "Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats". Retro band that is heavily influenced by the 60's and 70's, and even acquired period instruments and uses period recording techniques. Really good. One of my fave songs from them is Mt Abraxas.

-Brian

Oh I am sort of embarrassed to admit I love this song.
Interestingly it is very similar structurally to a lot of the stuff on Death Magnetic.

Jason Newstead could stand to be a bit less weird looking. And the 80's pornstache isn't helping

Isn't that the Japanese name for Godzilla? Great band name if so.

Yes it is. They are a French band (imagine that) whose lyrics mostly revolve around environmentalism (with tracks like "Toxic Garbage Island" and "Oroborous" sp?) They were originally named Godzilla but I guess ran into some copyright issues and changed to the Japanese version, which is arguably a million times better anyway.

Dayum!!!

I had Never heard of them.

This is fantastic!

Thanks!

Dig in man. Check out their albums "The way of all flesh", "From Mars to Sirius" and their latest "L'Enfant Sauvage". They're on tour now with Mastodon, if they come through your area it is not to be missed. Their live performance is bloody insane.

Music, like musicians, goes through phases.

When you see modern movies using music from the 70 and 60's, it's often because there's so few artists that haven't sold-out. The new music just fails to provide much in the way of an effective, thought provoking, experience.

In the late 50's to 60's music went through a phase where you could make a living as a singer using the alphabet for lyrics. Remember ba, ba, ba, ba, ba-barann? I could name dozens, of not more artists that sang songs with such little significance that they had to evolve, or give up, because they had such a small amount of talent, but a record company that used them as long as they could.

Nowadays we consume the hell out of everything and move on.

These little viral artists have an entire music career in the span of a year
I am sure Psy (Gangnam style) made more money off that 1 song than he would have off a 10 year music career in the 90s

Now, a song comes out and we download it and stream it and it is on the radio and you can hear it any time you want and then we are done.

I believe we will see fewer and fewer long career musicians and everyone will be a one hit wonder.

Yep, and then that ONE AMAZING talent will come along and make us all sit up, stop talking and start listening.

Eric Clapton
Elvis
Patsy Cline
Johnny Cash
The Grateful Dead
Andre Rieu
Yo Yo Mah (sp)
Phil Driscoll
Zam Fir (also sp)
The Beatles

EVERYONE can add to this list. It certainly isn't complete, just barely started.

You're misquoting "Barbara Ann" to rant about artists with no talent? The Beach Boys may take issue with that.

All the crazy metal aside, I could listen to Buckethead for hours upon hours:

Or:

Guy is an amazing talent on the guitar.

listening to itunes radio and the 50's song sleepwalk came on, and now i want to take a nap.. (Radio station in SD used to use it for a mattress store commercial)

No matter what your taste there's good stuff out there, you just have to look for it.
Oh and auto tune is the most evil invention ever.

My kids are all into todays music crap and I just cannot catch on to it.
Can the artist if that is what you call them actually sing? :dunno:
I could be a pop star as well with all the Techno Mixing.

I'm the product of being a Teen in the 80's so that is the kind of music I enjoy. Singers with actual talent.

Ahhh long live the days of parachute pants, leather paints, break dancing and chilling to Lionel Richie songs.

I get tired of the radio battle with the kids on long trips. They keep changing the station. I say "My car My radio get over it" After that they plug into their smart phones and listened to their downloaded music. :rolleyes2:

Rant over.
Sail On was a good song. For real Music, I'll send you Jimi's 2nd show at Berkeley. You won't find it on YouTube. I quit all the modern pop at age 8 when my Dad slapped a Jimi tape in my hands.

Bucket head is my favorite guitarist of all time!

His live shows are just nutso good.

He just released the 93rd album in his Pikes series. He puts out music faster than I can listen to it. High five dude.

I need to get you a copy of Jimi's 2nd show at Berkeley too. The Machine Gun at that show might be as good as it will ever get.

Love me some Jimi. Check out some of Shawn Lane's covers of his tunes. Jimi is probably the most visionary guitarist ever, but Lane is probably the most talented ever in my opinion.

Boy George????

Seriously?

That's like saying the guy that sang "too sexy for my short" was a break through artist.

John Denver, I could listen to him all night. Seriously. Nice, soothing guitar. Nothing great, just... Nice.

Chet Atkins... Yep

Roger Williams
Peter Nero
Robert Goulet
Bing Crosby
Perry Como
Andy Williams

The last three especially at Christmas time

You like Chet, what about Jerry Reed? A lot of stuff Chet recorded was written by Jerry.

I do agree with you about boy George, doesn't belong on that list.

Oh yea, what about Jim Croce? A list worthy name as well.

Today's music reflects today's kids, spoiled, phony, intellectually lazy, missing the point in every possible way, and so utterly useless that it won't survive the current generation.

"And did you see the way he moved his hips? It's a sin, I tell you!" :goofy:

My Grandmother, talking about Elvis.

Someone mentioned lyrics, if you get an app called SoundHound (free), it will listen to music being played (or hummed/sung) and name the tune.

Then, while the song is playing it will feed you the lyrics slightly in advance of them being heard so you can sing along.

There are also websites with lyrics to any tune, any version of that tune. Metrolyrics etc.
