The hardware is used for Autopilot, which is included in every Tesla. Only the additional FSD features cost extra.

But, Teslas are not for everybody. I'm okay with that. I probably wouldn't want the type of car that you drive, either, though I have no interest in describing the reasons why I don't like it to those, like you, who do.

I'm thinking four little probes off the front (ALA F-117) and a ghostish looking bat symbol somewhere on it along with monocolor USAF markings and it would a pretty cool ride.

I tried out the FSD this month with the free trial. Not impressed. Works about 90 % of the time. I was cruising along the highway when it turned on the left turn signal, switched to the left lane and hit the brakes. Guy that was behind me blew passed me on the right. Then as I approach work it hit the left turn signal early and tried to turn me off on the road that about 100 ft prior to my road.

I don’t need a car that does everything for me so I don’t care about FSD. AP works fine. Keeps me in my lane, keeps me proper distance from cars in front and emergency braking if necessary. Of course my cameras are on the blink right now so I currently don't even have a basic cruise…so there’s that. :(

Earlier this week I finally got the offer of the free month of Full Self Driving. Played with it yesterday.

There’s an expression: “The amazing thing about a singing dog is not that it sings well, it’s that it can sing at all!”.

That’s my impression so far. On the Interstate it’s creepily efficient. Had only one oopsie in maybe 30 miles - it started to change lanes out of the passing lane, not “seeing” a car merging from an entrance ramp. I intervened, though it probably would have handled it eventually. In town, even in the “Chill” setting, acceleration and deceleration were far more aggressive than the way I drive. More tiring to be constantly monitoring it than just driving. Still pretty amazing, though, and a glimpse at what the future holds.

At the current price of $8,000, no way. But at its current $99/month, and I’d consider buying a month here and there for road trips. At a lower monthly rate it would be close to a no-brainer, especially as its capabilities improve.
 
I’d never purchase it. Even if it were free I’d stick with AP.

I moved from S FL to N GA, and now E TN, largely because of the roads and I love driving and riding on them.

Creeping along on the Interstate in bumper-to-bumper traffic? Not so much. In cases like that, a competent autonomous system would be a godsend.
 
ISTM that a fully autonomous car would be able to take the kids to school without me. It also seems that it would mean there’s no such thing as DUI.

Are we anywhere near that level of autonomy?
 
One of these drove by my house today. That's more unusual considering that I live on a dead end street with only maybe 20 houses and a small business on it.

Anyway, it was a weird experience. Much more surprising than I would have expected it to be. My immediate reaction was something like this:
1 - what the hell is that?
2 - have a been transported into a Mad Max movie?
3 - so these things really are real!

I may live a bit of a sheltered life. But that said, a couple of months ago I had what looked a lot like a McLaren pass me on the highway. That sparked a much different reaction, "huh, that's pretty cool." and "I didn't know a car could be that low to the ground".
 
I saw my first one in the wild yesterday. It was along side, slightly ahead, or slightly behind me for several miles of busy highway, so I got a good look. The pics never impressed me, and seeing the real deal didn't change my mind at all. In person, it was bigger than I had expected.
 
Saw one in the wild at a restaurant in Cali a few weeks ago. I was very underwhelmed. I was underwhelmed. Seemed like it took up the space of a full-sized truck, but I don't see how there is ANY kind of room inside (especially for someone like me that needs decent leg and headroom). Sent the pic to my 12 y/o son who has been soaking up the Tesla hype for years and even he said "Ugh.. That's ugly!"

As has been roughly mentioned before, the CyberTruck is a vehicle for Tesla EV die-hards that want to drive a truck when they don't actually need a truck. It's hideous, but Teslarati-types will dismiss the design and call it "revolutionary and forward-thinking". Form follows function most of the time with trucks, and the CT has terrible form to allow it function like a truck. I think Tesla's design goal to make something stand out and be different eclipsed the goal of making something that would truly disrupt the full-size truck market. It's a bastardized Honda Ridgeline, with even less utility. I don't say any of that to discount the EV or embedded technology of the CT, it's just an ugly vehicle that destroys a lot of the utility a truck should have.

Spot on. It's a large, expensive novelty item for people who want to make a very specific public statement.
 
It’s junk and wait til these new owners get to the pleasure of experiencing the many trips to the Tesla service center. Iron deposits (rust) at 5+00? My DeLorean is 40 years old and I don’t have that much rust on the body panels. I’ve had a few spots that come off with stainless polish.

Everybody complaining about it's looks and utility yet you take pictures when you see one, watch videos on youtube, comment every time you pass one. I'd say mission accomplished for Tesla! They aren't intended for people who NEED a truck, or even a practical vehicle. They are meant for the types of people who buy exotic sports cars, and G wagons that are 200k more than they should be. It isn't supposed to make sense, be a good value, or even reliable. It gets attention and shows you have money. No I'll never buy one or any 100k vehicle for that matter, but I still dig the fact they had the nerve to actually build it. People buy Porsche's and Ferrari's because they are supposed to be these amazing cars to drive yet they are left in their garage or driven slowly and carefully to a cars and coffee then right back home. Heck I bet there are a large number of people on here who daily drive a truck that only get's used as a truck a few times a month. Let people enjoy what they enjoy what they enjoy!

It's not a good truck, or even an ok truck. It's not a good luxury vehicle, it's not a good sports car. All it is good for is "look at me!". Which, I guess is ok, if that is what you need.
 
Well Tesla has always been polarizing. Most people either hate them or love em. I’m one of the few like James May. They have their strengths and they have some serious weaknesses.

At the reveal, I thought the Cybertruck was hideous but having seen it in person, it looks ok. Doesn’t matter that it looks different than anything else on the road. It’s the typical minimalistic interior design of Tesla but with a radical exterior. It’s just OK. I’ll take the looks and practicality of my X any day over the Cybertruck.

 
Cybertrucks are for cyberpeople. Those whose real and online lives are so blended that they can no longer tell the difference. Those who gain real personal satisfaction from having the latest big thing on InstaTube or whatever.

In other words, people younger than anyone on this thread, probably.

I saw several in the wild over the last 2 weeks and thought they were literally the dumbest F-ing thing I have ever seen. And I am a Tesla fan and Musk admirer. But I'm also turning 60 later this summer, which means I am not a cyberperson. Hell, I'm lucky to get my TV remote to work.
 
Man, I wish I had snapped a picture, but I saw a CyberTruck yesterday. . . Parked at a gas pump. Now, to be clear, it had just started hailing in Tulsa and I had pulled in just as it started and was getting some diesel. Within 30 seconds every open space was packed with cars looking to avoid hail damage, one of them being a CyberTruck. Struck me as funny seeing the ugly EV parked in front of a fuel pump.
