T-39A North American for sale - Detroit Public Schools

Interesting, if it goes near the current bid, they should do ok, especially if it has the engines.

It says both engines appear intact in response to one of the inquiries. Doesn't look like they have 80 psi in the tires though :). I like the "the door is locked and we don't have the key" way of handling what is going on inside the plane.

Saberliner. Converting Jet A into noise and black smoke since 1966....

I am thinking it will probably sell for a few bucks short of the scrap value.

They only give you two days to remove it! I guess anyone bidding will have that planned out in advance, but that isn't a lot of time.

Sure would be a fun thing to park outside the fence of an airport and turn it into a playground.

Sold for $6100. That same outfit is selling a bunch of props and engines next week, especially a bunch of round engines!

Heck.. If it was still 500 bucks ....I would buy it, put it on a pole and make a nifty wind indicator

Public school aerospace program? Such things exist?

Two days is plenty of time. Push it back over a low boy equipment trailer and rent a gas powered demolition circular saw and chop the wings and tail off, cut them to fit on another trailer, strap and chock it all down and drive off. An experienced team will be done in half a day.

It's when you get home and start chopping the clean aluminum panels from between the rivet lines that takes time.

When Clover Park Tech in WA State moved to their new facilities at Thun Field moving their Saber Liner was an expensive proposition. But they wanted it intact at the new location.

That was a few years ago. :D

Yes. My wife is an aerospace educator. She got the gig originally because she was a special education science and math teacher that ran the aviation club (actually two clubs one general and a special one for girls only) and the rubber powered flight duration for the Science Olympiad (her teams won state two years in a row). Her county also had a high school program (sort of a mini votech). They and the next county over put a teacher at the Udvar-Hazy center so that field trips actually had some educational content. She converted over to full time staff there some time ago, but still participates in Aviation Education workshops (most recently at Sun-n-Fun, but she'll do so at Oshkosh).

If I remember correctly the wing skins on a Saberliner are about 1" thick. The F-86 used the same wing ??:dunno:..

It will take a LONG time to cut off those wings..

Lol, not even, I take it you haven't worked with one of these hand held 3-5hp chop saws with the 12" - 16" multi cutter blades huh? It's like taking a circular saw through plywood. Heck, we used to take the 4 1/2 inch blades on those little 4 1/2" air angle grinders and cut through 12mm aluminum all day long fabricating aluminum boats. You never put them on an electric because if the blade grabs really ugly things happen to people.

I understand your feeling... I HATE cutting aluminum with chop saws as the wheel loads up with gummy aluminum and it can hurt ya faster then a New York second.... I watched the guy from Beegles cut up the RV-7 that was in my yard last year so he could truck it off to the recycling place.. Altho, I heard that didn't work as planned since the plane didn't burn and there were ALOT of "biological hazards" left in the wreckage.. I think they took it back to their yard and burned it to clean the mess up....
