STRATUX

Saw one on eBay the other day, it's gone now though.

Do these things have ahrs?

Have a fellow pilot who did one for 185.00 ,he likes it ,doesn't want to sell .hes not into manufacturing. Give it a try ,how bad can it be.

Anyone have EASY TO FOLLOW instructions on how to procure parts, assemble and program a STRATUX?

I have the link to the redit thread...

https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/3g7urb/the_11390_adsb_receiver_for_foreflight_or_pretty/

...and it makes my head spin. Too complicated.

Yes, I'm lazy and want everything handed to me. Blame society. :)

Yes, there are easy to follow instructions on one of the message boards. I think it is called Pilots of America.

http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85058&referrerid=11159

It has pictures, step by step instructions, and, if you can't figure it out, there are plenty of question and answers, plus people willing to help.

Yeah, I saw that thread, but also saw it had 572 posts. So it scared me away.

Just now I got the courage up to open that thread and whatdoyouknow - post number one is step by step instructions.

Should be a fun project to create another toy that will help me keep my head in the cockpit during sunny days in busy airspace.

First decision is - do you want to have a custom case or is velcro'ing the Raspberry Pi case to the battery good enough? If you want AHRS, then you'll need a custom case to install the AHRS chip along with the RPi and SDRs.

Next decision - do you want both 978 and 1090 or will 978 frequency be enough for you?

You'll also want to stay current on the author's website, instructions and links to the current versions of the software:

http://stratux.me/

Yes, almost 600 replies but only a handful are critical. We should create a locked thread just for the relevant responses.

Find a 10 year old and give them your credit card :)

Seriously it's plug and play , if you know what USB is, you are half way there !!

No.

Please do not advocate locking that thread.

It is valuable and becomes more valuable as people share their experiences.

Didn't say lock that thread - but create one with just critical details, make it a sticky, limit/lock responses. Going thru almost 600 replies (when many, including mine from early Sept) are noise.

There are user guides out there, including links to them in the thread, if somebody wants a simple guide.

The first versions of Stratux had a lot of steps. The code writers newest versions are simple:
unzip the download file
Find the image file in the unzipped file
Use disk writer software to put the image file on the microSD card.
It makes the microSD card a bootable card.
Assemble the parts and turn it on.
Watch your iPad setup and connect wifi to Stratux
Open ForeFlight and in devices section watch it auto connect to FreeFlight
Done

A bunch of folks (many posting in this thread already) helped me. I had a couple of little issues - power cord, imaging the card, etc.

At the risk of a looooong post, here is all my collected wisdom. Note that I created virtually none of this - it's collected from many sources which I hopefully credited. And, here's a picture of the milk and homemade cookies my friend's wonderful wife brought us while we were soldering!

EAA's overview article - from September, so dated info: http://www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-...s/live-weather-and-traffic-for-less-than-$120

Very long 23-page forum discussion of the Stratux. Not organized: http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85058

Short overview by the creator with additional links, including what we might want for GPS/AHRS connection info: http://stratux.me/

12-minute video on physical assembly. Not needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rEOJrw4ds8

GitHub documentation. The stuff we really need is at the end and seems not to be completed. https://github.com/ssokol/stratux/wiki/Stratux-Beginner's-Guide

Photo of GPS-AHRS connections attached. We need small wires. If you have little jumper things, we're in great shape! See also GPS-USB for the USB version which is apparently extremely fragile, and a truly ghetto enclosure.

Convoluted reddit discussion I have not reviewed: https://www.reddit.com/r/stratux/

Info on imaging the disk. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/windows.md I ended up using SDFormatter on the disk and used Stratux V0.4r4. Release info here - https://github.com/cyoung/stratux/releases

Questions/Issues:
1. Existing problem - eeee often added to the aircraft descriptions.
2. How to configure the AHRS with ForeFlight? (May be a ForeFlight code and/or license issue. I get AHRS on the Stratux web screen, but not with ForeFlight.)

Random notes -
1. The GPS has an internal battery charged by the whole system. It uses this battery to hold time/last location between reboots. Losing this charge means up to 45 mins for GPS lock due to Cold/Factory reboot.
2. Getting AHRS into the Stratux is technically/programmatically very difficult and Stratux is far from perfect. There is skepticism if the AHRS works correctly - 'not handling accelerated flight.' https://www.reddit.com/r/stratux/comments/3w4kfg/foreflight_cuts_off_ahrs_in_75_ios_update/ (I am using ForeFlight 7.5)
https://www.reddit.com/r/stratux/comments/3w0od7/ry835ai_issues_anyone_else_seeing_this/
3. GPS must point forward. When you're looking at the GPS antenna and reading the writing on top of it, look closely at the top of the circuit board. There are 3 small chips along the edge. Notice the two on the right. One's the gyro and one's the compass. They each have axis symbols printed beside then. Basically, the writing on the GPS must point toward the front of the airplane.
4. Many have concerns about corrupting the Pi SD card via poweroffs. Here is an alternative: https://www.reddit.com/r/stratux/comments/3qgccp/shutdown_button_solved/
5. To save space, we removed the cases on the SDRs and covered them in heavy-duty heat shrink wrap.

Enhancements:
1. Shorten antenna wires. This was well worth the effort - much neater.
2. High-quality power cable. Don't use a cheap one or it won't work.

It's very very simple if you do not (yet) want the AHRS functionality, which has been problematic. Stick with the original one-receiver configuration if you want to make it as easy as you can, you can always upgrade later (I haven't yet, and I built mine in August when the plans first came out). The Reddit thread has a couple of stickies at the top. Read the second one, which references the first one for a couple details.

https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/3g7urb/the_11390_adsb_receiver_for_foreflight_or_pretty/

Order the parts. Plug them together. Download software. Done.

My 8-year old daughter assembled it in less than 20 minutes.

Excellent analysis.. here are a few of my findings as well.

2. How to configure the AHRS with ForeFlight? (May be a ForeFlight code and/or license issue. I get AHRS on the Stratux web screen, but not with ForeFlight.)

Mine works with Foreflight - Did you enable it in the Devices? Once you add AHRS, there is an additional device that shows up in FF to enable.

Random notes -

I've never had it take more than 60 seconds with a clear view of the sky, in the hangar, forget it.

2. Getting AHRS into the Stratux is technically/programmatically very difficult and Stratux is far from perfect. There is skepticism if the AHRS works correctly - 'not handling accelerated flight.'

As stated above, mine "works" I haven't messed with it enough to determine if its "accurate" or even useful for that matter.

Not much of an issue, especially if you pick up one of the 3d cases. As i understand it, this is the same for the real stratus as well.

I just received the parts and built a Stratux. Looking forward to testing in the air on Sunday.

I really can't imagine anything much easier that a shopping list of parts that will fit together in a relatively obvious way once you get them unless you are also going for the AHRS. It takes about 10-20 minutes to put the basic unit together.

It might or might not be society. If the Reddit instructions make your head spin, it may just be that tinkering is not for everyone.

I'm not the only one who thought the Reddit thread was overwhelming.

But, you're right. Tinkering is not for everyone.

The society comment was a joke. Humor is not for everyone either. Some people just want to be serious all the time.

Of course it was a joke. I understood and appreciated the humor in the comment. I guess you missed it in my response ;)

The Reddit thread was a mess but readable. There's a nice set of accurate instructions on stratux.me that would appear to me to be boiled down to the absolute basics that anyone should be able to follow.

http://stratux.me, yea, it has been drastically simplified that reddit post.

Cannot wait to try this on Sunday.
