While the Stratus 3 claims to be compatible with multiple tablet applications other than Foreflight. An important issue Appareo does not make clear is; It can not communicate with other apps AND Foreflight at the same time. So if you are using FlyQ and your co-pilot, or even a passenger in the back fires up Foreflight, the Stratus 3 will switch modes and stop sending data to FlyQ. No warning is seen in FlyQ. Update: I spoke with a representative of Appareo. The proprietary protocol that ForeFlight uses prevents simultaneous operation with the GDL 90 protocol that everyone else uses. They will also update their documentation to make this issue clear.
Thanks for the heads up! Kind of makes sense, although it would have been nice if that had been documented...
This sounds like they fed you a line of BS to me, since ForeFlight uses the GDL90 protocol to communicate with other devices...
I don't use foreflight, but this doesn't sound right to me. Does foreflight not work with other ADS-B receivers that use GDL 90 protocol?
I use flyq and the back up ipad from the club uses foreflight. This may explain why my weather and traffic drops on my flyq and it remains on foreflight. We run a Stratus 1S in the plane though. The stratus might need to be updates (software or hardware) to handle broadcasting the GDL 90 and the proprietary channel that foreflight uses simultaneously. Big mistake on Appareo's part.
