5/22/10 A '76 Cessna 210, N2611S, sn: 210-61339 was reported stolen from Punta Chivato, Baja Mexico on 3/30.

1/7/10 A 1972 Cessna 150, N211DA, SN: 15073829 was reported stolen from Tamiami, FL.

12/20/09 A 1979 Cessna T210N, N6954N, S/N: 21063164 was last seen at Bajia Asuncion, Baja California, Mexico on 12/19/09

9/26/09 A 2005 Cessna T182T, N2183P was reported stolen at 5:45 am from Bonners Ferry, ID. It was found crashed in Washington State. No one aboard. Cancel this alert.

7/6/09 A Cessna 182N Skylane was stolen from Baja, Mexico. The aircraft had a prop lock and also a throttle lock installed, however the thieves were able to breach these security devices.

I'm going to guess a lot of them got repurposed into the "pharmaceutical" business. Maybe not the 150 and the Zenith but the 210's, Seneca, etc.

Ooh that one is interesting.

Looks like 2009 was a bumper crop year for aircraft thrives in Baja. Wow.

2008 recession drove up drug smuggling, or just a whole bunch of folks found some people to make airplanes disappear for insurance checks to cover their short calls...

LOL.

I wonder how many AIG actuaries were rolling their eyes at the number of stolen aircraft that year.
 
From reading that, it wouldn't surprise me if insurance companies put on a pretty hefty surcharge for planes visiting Mexico.
That 182RG with all the locks; that must bite. Doesn't speak too highly of the devices either.
 
Those 210’s and 206 have been ‘repurposed’ flying ‘cargo’ across the border.

Smash the window and a big set of bolt cutters to the padlock on the fancy control lock.

I haven’t seen anything that truly secures a Cessna. Not if you’re willing to cause some damage to plexiglass.

Kinda like cars. I wish the thieves would just ask for the pocket change and the $75 Steele’s they’ve taken. The window costs a lot more to replace.
 
Some were likely insurance fraud, total pieces of crap that were insured to the hilt and disappeared.

Remember "The Club" anti-theft device for cars..???

About 25 years ago a guy in Houston was caught with stolen car parts on his property. Also found was over 10,000 clubs.

Per Wikipedia:
The Club as originally designed was prone to having its lock shattered by freezing with freon; later models addressed this issue by changing to a chromium/molybdenum alloy. A television broadcast test showed that this form of attack now took several minutes of hammering. The most grievous flaw in the design is inherent in the modern construction of steering wheels; thieves can defeat this type of lock by making a cut through the steering wheel's outer rim, allowing the device to be removed. This does, however, require access to a hacksaw or other cutting tool, and ruins the steering wheel. However, after the Club has been removed, it can be used to assist the thief in breaking the steering lock built into the steering column; some thieves target cars "protected" with the Club over other cars for this reason. An additional device called "The Cap" was made which was added a metal cover over the steering wheel, this can also be defeated by replacing the entire steering wheel with an identical one.

Recently, a device called "The Buster" has been designed for locksmiths. It is a big screw with a hook on one end and a large handle on the other and two legs designed to rest on the lock. It breaks steering wheel locks such as the Club by hooking onto the lock and tightening the screw with the handle. The large handle provides mechanical advantage, concentrating the force applied by the hook and eventually forcing the lock to fold in half or snap in two.
 
After seeing this list I now know why my policy does not cover Mexico... :yikes:
 
They should hire those guys from the Airplane Repo TV show. They could find and get those planes back! Those guys were amazing!!!

In the bad old days (the '70s) I used to disable my car by removing the high tension lead between the coil and the distributor cap, and take it with me. No thief carries one of those.

I had a hidden switch that turned off the juice going from the coil to the distributor so even if someone hot wired the coil it still would not start or run. Man, could I make that thing backfire....

I don't think many area flying over our area. We're drone saturated between Lordsburg NM and Douglas AZ. They also have Border Patrol trucks with what look like mini-radars in their truck bed that they park at night (radar and thermal). Number of ultra-light night flights dropped in our area and moved south to Big Bend. Used to hear these directly above my airport after night flights several years ago.

Pretty sure I know the pilot/owner of the is airplane and did his checkout in the plane when he bought it.

Probably would have just been stolen if he hadn't installed a dummy (plugged) fuel line. Part of his Mexico preflight is to replace the Fuel line section.
