Spooked for no reason

Discussion in 'Lessons Learned' started by Temporarily Worried, Sep 5, 2018.

  1. Some time ago, I was on my way in to KSQL, and reported inbound overhead the OSI VORTAC. Tower controller gave me the usual instructions (cross mid-field 1200 feet, report overhead) and then said "and are you aware you are in restricted airspace right now?"

When I landed, I double-checked the NOTAMs again, and sure enough there was a NOTAM... but it was for parachute jumping over Stanford stadium, 1nm radius at 8 nm from the VORTAC. So not "restricted airspace" and also not where I was.

Sure had me nervous for the whole approach and landing though.

    Say what?

And you didn’t clarify with the controller during the event? This one really sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me.

    Nice try, play again!

So... SQL queried you and you returned a null result?

Many sporting events have a TFR, could have been what they were talking about?

    one of the Non-Plot-able TFR's?

FDC 9/5151, issued under 14 CFR 99.7 on "Special Security Instructions," restricts flight over stadiums during major league baseball, National Football League, NCAA, and motor speedway events. The so-called “stadium TFR” prohibits
    [IMG]
all aircraft and parachute operations at or below 3,000 AGL within a 3 nm radius of any stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 or more people when there is a major league baseball game, NFL game, NCAA division one football game, or major motor speedway event occurring. This TFR applies to the entire US domestic national airspace system, and takes effect from one hour before the scheduled event time until one hour after the event concludes

Hey let’s see you do better with a couple of IPAs in you while eating a pork chop and checking out the waitress’s equipment. My capacity to be witty is limited under normal circumstances let alone these.

Would you say you’re the client and she’s the server?

I hear there were protests at that airport. People were holding signs that read ‘NoSQL’.

And local ATC does not know when the game/race ended so they don’t know when the TFR is lifted.
ForeFlight will chart the stadium TFR based on scheduled game time, but may not know when game is over.

  15. I said something like “no, I was not aware of that” and fully expected a follow up upon touchdown, but heard nothing more and didn’t bother calling them after I looked it up.

  16. Overhead the VORTAC was my closest approach to the stadium, and it was 6-8 miles away. And the NOTAM was for them practicing the day before the game.

Cougar was a wuss, IMHO. I gotta wonder, after he turned in (threw) his wings, did he find a lucrative job in form of flying cargo planes full of rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong? Lucky duck!
