Something new on the freeway....

It would have been more exciting if the spool unwound as it rolled.

creeps me out sometimes to see the deadly stuff on flatbeds, thinking of the consequences of a poor securing job or failed strap.

It should be mandatory for all high school students to learn how to tie knots and fasten loads to a vehicle. Every person has had to tie a mattress down at least once in their life.

I can't look at a spool of cable without thinking about something that happened nearly 30 years ago. I was pulling some network cable (might have been something like RG-58 coax or something fairly heavy gauge). Another guy had the spool and a screwdriver or something similar through it so it could unwind while I pulled. He was bent over, holding the spool in 2 hands between his knees. What neither of us knew was there was a loose end on the spool, just long enough to whip around from underneath and smack him where it counts. I think it whacked him 4 or 5 times before he dropped it.

I get nervous when I am on my motorcycle and I get behind something like that. I do my best to get around it ASAP.

I never saw wire unspool from a truck, but one day our volunteer fire company was going down the road to standby at another fire house. On the rear step is a large valve that mounts to a hydrant called a "Meushaw." Attached to that is 1500 feet of 3" hose. This thing came loose at about 55MPH and provided just enough drag to lay out all 1500' of hose. The driver hadn't noticed it had happened until the police came by and mentioned there as a lot of hose out in the road. Looked at the back of the engine, oh crap. It's amazing how straight the hose lay is when you do it 55 rather than the usual 5-10 MPH. The Meushaw was pretty much toast though. The valve stems were ground off flat. We had to buy the newer "Humat" to replace it.
