Solo Time

For a while some of the insurers our club was shopping wanted goofy categories like turbo charged engine tie and tail dragger time that most people don't bother to keep track of. I guess there are some advantages to keeping these things in a spread sheet so you can arbitrarily recategorize things.

Tailwheel time is quite important

I'm always asked that since many of the planes I used to fly and my personal plane is a tailwheel, I asked around and it seems if you got over 1k tailwheel it's all the same to insurance so since I crossed that point a while ago I just say 1k every time even though I'm over that amount.

I think it was different back then...
It was.

Prior to the 1997 Part 61 rewrite, there was a commercial 250 NM cross country but it was not required to be solo. The long solo requirement, which is based on ICAO commercial requirements, was met by a student pilot solo cross country that was 300 NM with at least one point of landing 100 NM from the original departure.

The 1997 revision did two related things. It cut the student solo cross country in half. And it moved the longer solo requirement to the commercial.

I remember the student solo with three 100 mile legs, but I have no memory of doing a commercial solo. However, that doesn't mean much...

I haven't instructed anyone for a certificate or rating since before 1997. If I was going to do it again I would need a lot of brush-up, and not just on the regs.

Personally, I like to log Hammer Time. It reminds me of the early days of hip hop.
