Our EAA chapter hasn’t been filing our state forms for a while and I’m not sure if we have been filing the federal forms. I know from the news that journalists can get copies of non-profit tax returns but it isn’t obvious to me how find ours—if we filed any.

I need IRS Form 990-N for the past 9 years. Any idea how I can get them?

990-N can only be filed online. There is no physical form.

I have no idea how journalists get the returns. I do know the organization is supposed to make them available for three years, but I'm not aware of any searchable database.

The easiest place to get the returns is Guidestar.org. They get 990s for all 501(c)3s (at least I think so) from the IRS and then post them online. So if you look there you can see Cloud Nine's 990-EZ from 2017 (2018 I'm still finishing up, due in a couple weeks).

However, the 990-N is just a postcard/online form that basically says "We took in less than [the threshold number] and therefore don't need to file a 990-EZ or 990." So I'm not sure what exactly would be shown in that case.

Guidestar may have our information, but I don’t want to pay$125 to get it. I’m wary of using the IRS form since if we haven’t filed state forms the odds are we haven’t filed federal either. No sense in reminding them.

Thanks

I followed the links on the IRS website you guys provided and found this one.

It turns out that we filed a 990-N from for a few of the years that I need, but unfortunately, that form doesn’t list income like the 990-EZ does.

Who did the forms? If whomever did the forms didn’t keep a copy, i would “fire” them immediately. If a CPA did them and does not have a copy they can get reprimanded by the state board and possibly get suspended.

I think the cutoff is $50,000 of anticipated revenue. If you come in under that threshold, then the reporting requirements are minimal. You don't need to file the 990-EZ. They basically don't care about organizations that small.

I haven't been on any non-profit boards in a few years, though, so check with an expert. Things do change.
