Reason number 21567225789 to be a vegetarian...

Fun fact: More people get sick from E coli from eating vegetables than meat.

The sad fact about E-coli is it comes from the workers who bring the fruits and veggies in from the fields and packaging them. The workers don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom.. Scary thought..

According to the Mayo clinic the larger source of ecoli contamination comes form run off from cattle farms. Sure, what you are saying is sort of true, the non-hand-washing contamination mostly comes from restaurant workers who don't wash their hands, not the pickers. But the Mayo clinic is saying that the meat production causes far more contamination to produce. In either case, simply washing your vegetables before eating them is prudent.

Only reason needed not to be:
NCI_bacon.jpg

Bacon is one of the most vile substances on earth. I just don't understand why anyone would find a fried piece of fat appealing. :vomit:

Hmmm. Bacon. I bet your dog would eat the hell out of it

Wait a damn minute. This country will produce about 25,000,000,000 lbs of beef this year. That 22,000 lbs recall is a tiny tiny tiny incident. Oh, btw this ground beef and there is only a food safety risk if it is improperly handled or cooked.

The food production system in the US is remarkably efficient and safe. However there is no such thing as 100%. I'm sure you've also stopped eating -

Frozen Berries
Tahini
Cucumbers
Spinach
Peanut Butter
Mangoes
Cantaloupe
Sprouts
Lettuce
Pine Nuts

:ohsnap:

Wait, I thought we cooked meat cause we just assumed it to be teeming with germs?

:yeahthat: And now apparently .0000009% of something is considered a "huge" portion...

Whole muscle beef and pork are mostly safe to eat raw. Ground products and poultry much less so.

Try telling my stomach that. My parents always prepared all meats well done. So much so that a steak rarely required a knife.

Only in recent years have I ventured into med-well. Taste real good but makes me sick and/or tired each time I do. Seems that "undercooked" is an acquired ability.

If everything is pink it is rather unlikely that any issues are food safety related.

Never saw a recall or epidemic caused by any reading my morning news.

BTW, completely support your choice to be vegetarian. However, please do not make that choice, and denigrate those of us who work hard everyday to provide safe affordable protein, because of food safety.

What are the other 21567225788 reasons?
It is a pretty good pickup line! Most of the time.
That could possibly account for just about all of the other reasons.

I think we're expecting a bit too much in the way of food safety anyways. Generally accepted practices treat meat and everything it touches as if the surface of the meat was completely contaminated.

OTOH, we don't really cook a lot of our produce, so that's another matter.

It's that organic stuff that you have to watch out for. That stuff'll kill ya.

Too long to write. The three main reasons:

1. Vegetarian food is usually are far healthy than mean food. Far less fat, far few calories.

2. Animals grown for consumption are usually very bad for the environment.

3. Animals grown for consumption are usually treated horribly.

Of course there are many, many more, but life is too short.

Spoken like someone who's never lived on a cattle-ranch.

Damn cows were treated better than us kids!

Fiction can be fun!!

Your highest calorie FOODS are, dun dun DUN....not meat.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

Things I learned in the Navy that are equally applicable in the civilian world... I can prove or disprove anything with a good colorful PowerPoint slide...who needs facts when you can make your own bullets with pretty colors!

Your highest calorie foods are deserts made from dairy, and are not part of the daily diet. The stuff that is part of a normal balanced daily diet tends to contain far less fat if made without meat, and absolutely does if made without dairy. You will not find dishes made with meat that are lower in fat and overall calories than the average food served within the Steinholme.

Joking aside, most of the pure vegetarians I have known in life have had weight problems, primarily due to a diet high in carbohydrates and low in protein. I'm not knocking Steingar and I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's a real challenge to keep your protein intake adequate without incurring a high carbohydrate loading as a pure vegetarian.

Certainly I get the whole point about excessive saturated fats, yada yada and no bacon isn't great for you even though it may be tasty. I think there is a happy medium.

I spend a fair amount of time in Southeast Asia and I eat lots of leafy green vegetables, fish and other seafood, and a little rice. I drop tons of weight when I am there. Eliminate the fish and seafood, and I'd probably die of atrophy or starvation.

Sac....that is the most sensible post I think you've made here. Well said.

Here kids are required to help take care of the ones that need a helping hand.
