Not a 747, but on an Airbus 321 we do a walk around every leg. It's different from a small airplane. Obviously we can't see every safety pinned aileron joint. But we do have a completely systematic, by the book way to inspect certain things on the walk around. It's very procedural.

B747 pilots do walk-arounds, too. They spend a lot of them looking up.

So is it called a walk around, or a walk up around....

Good to know. I suspected as much but can't visualize a captain doing that workaround around a big plane, but makes sense

I wouldn't laugh... a buddy is an FO at UPS and says it's SOP for the captain to do the walkaround.

It's a little different... when you have a maintenance program and a mechanic has done a walk around right before you, and the aircraft has hydraulically actuated flight controls with position indicators and hydraulic and oil quantity indicators

You should see how its done in the rain... it truly becomes a "workaround".

Exactly... we do a walk around ever time we land, but roughly 1 of 3 times MTC is there waiting for us.
    God bless 121

You do postflight and preflight walkarounds?

Yes. Divi it up however you want with oncoming/outgoing crew, but the airplane gets a walkaround every leg.
As I said, if MTC greets the airplane (roughly 1 in 3 times) there is no need to do a WA.

We did too Glenn. Company emphasized it especially on an overnight where the plane would sit overnight. If it needed maintenance the company would either have our mechanics or contract mechanics resolve the issue before the plane went out the following morning, hopefully.

we do indeed do walk arounds, typically the FO or the second officer does it if its a three man crew, however when I was captain on the CRJ and it was the Bahamas in the winter it was funny how it took me and the FO to do the walk around :D....when I was flying the CRJ's we did a preflight walk around and a post flight walk around regardless of if there was a crew we were about to hand the plane off to, and they had to do a preflight walk around as well. now where I am on the 757 we just do a preflight walk around prior to each leg. As mentioned its a different type of preflight, than you would on a cessna....plus no more sumping fuel!!!

Captain takes the left side, first officer takes the right side. They meet at the tail 3 days later....

Yes we do a walk around but maintenance does the hard stuff. Basically I look for nothing dripping, nothing hanging. It flew in and it will fly out. Seriously the whole process is the same but different.
