E Gordon Gee, the President of THE Ohio State University has been infected by the University President Stupidity Virus again.

Gee, whose annual salary and benefits exceed $2,000,000 apparently is resistant to a vaccination against the virus or does not have it included in his health plan since he has had several bouts of infection including the recent Coach Jim Tressel Tatoo Affair. President Gee was caught on tape referring to the University of Notre Dame as " those damn Catholics" and making denigrating remarks toward the SEC and The University of Louisville

The virus, closely related to two others, Foot In Mouth and Step On Your Tie varieties, causes seemingly competent University Presidents to utter totally inane or inappropriate statements or make unfathomable decisions. The most prominent recent other victim is the President of the State University of New Jersey, aka Rutgers. Common to both these outbreaks is The University of Louisville which may be the vector for infection.

Researchers believe the symptoms are manifested primarily in activities associated with big time college athletics although they cannot rule out other factors. The symptoms are closely related to Swollen Head Syndrome, more prevalent in members of the entertainment business and the media.

Gee is to undergo a "remediation plan" according to the Unversity. There are rumors that the NCAA may quarantine Gee and the Rutgers President in an attempt to contain the virus.

People are starting to wake up and see how big of a scam college is. UNL is still playing catch up trying to build as much crap as possible. Many universities when on building sprees and are carrying very large debts that ultimately do not create revenue, just "wow" factor that also is seen in tuition rates. "Make college affordable" my A&$, the government subsidizes theives. Not quite related to your post but $2m? Really?

Colleges generate revenue, but the quality of the students and research that they produce is highly suspect. Most of the "revenue" comes directly or indirectly from the taxpayer, all benefit of the big-government education industry.

Colleges, however, are not alone. Many K12 school districts are spending big bucks to build new schools, athletic fields, etc., all while academic achievement declines. It's always easy to spend your neighbor's money--you know, "for the children."

I meant that the stuff they are building (student union halls, auditoriums, and other "nice to have" amenities) that these universities are begging borrowing and stealing money to build, don't really create revenue, just add wow factor and cost...

When all I hear is "come to Joe's University where you'll be living large in style..." They are selling the college "experience" that continues to deal more in BS and less with academia.

Like going to a doctor's office that is nothing but new everything with "gold plated toilets" vs the other place that looks like people actually work there.

I agree with this and I just recently graduated from The Ohio State university.

Overall, I am not happy with the "quality" of education I got. Some of it was me, some instructors and the way the programs are run. For instance, the Earth Science class I took had a lab component. It was all done through a paper workbook. No hands on due to "budget cutbacks."

Also, Mr. Gee sold the management of the parking lots and garages to an Australian company for 50 years and $460 million to put into an account to grow last year. Stupid. The hospital is getting yet another new building and they are adding 20 or so stories onto another.

The University is a business, not a school.

My Son just graduated from UT Dallas as an EE. Great school, but they are in the midst of a building boom. He didn't get his grades until well after the graduation ceremony. Therefore, he didn't do. Didn't want to walk across the stage and get the diploma (or whatever they use in the ceremony) when he was worried about having passed one course he had trouble with. He did pass, but didn't know in time to participate in the grad ceremony. Why would anyplace do that? In one course, of course the one he was most worried about, he didn't get grades from a test until the day before the next one. How is he supposed to gauge where he is or learn from mistakes that way? Class mean on a test was 64.
Until student are the number one priority of universities, we'll see more of this egotistical, elitist stuff.

Best,

Dave

The 1" square tiles I've used come on a 12" square mesh background that sets the spacing and orientation. Not much more difficult than a 12" tile.

I hear what you all are saying and for the most part I agree completely. Many if not all universities in the D1 field and all NCAA processes are in need of a shake up. It's what happens when Big Money(sports, federal loans, boosters, etc) comes a calling. The universities can't just sit on that money, or use it for educational services, they have to have the 'bling'. It's quite shameful at most places, and very few are exempt.

I have a brilliant daughter going thru ChemEng in a major university that built a new football stadium about 5 years ago. Sadly, the football program hasn't had a good season for about 15 years, but they still got the bling. When she was recruited by the school, they spent a decent amount of money and time showing us all the athletic stuff, and training rooms, tutors, conditioning, and everything related to sports. After about 3 hours of this I spoke up and said 'uh - when do we go see the engineering dept, and the labs, and the head of the Chem Eng group?' The coach looked at me like I was from outer space. Even though I specifically asked for a tour, and some time with the engineer group.

I have to say, she is getting a great education from one of the top programs and they have plenty of stuff to make the students life challenging in the field of study. However, we've had our problems with the NCAA part of the equation. Luckily, since she's on scholarship, and has a 3.32 GPA, the last time the coach made some comment about all the time my kid was studying, I sent the AD a note that the sports was interfering with my "student-athlete" daughter, not which word comes first.

There was some blowback after that and no more issues with my kid studying and missing some of the BS crap that the athletic dept 'mandated'. Good programs are still out there for the top kids who are willing to take challenging and complex classes. You have to look hard, because they are getting fewer every year. Since the money coming in is so nice, we just suck up the NCAA crap, and smile when we cash the checks.

When I went to college, we had the grad ceremony on a Sunday, and the last day of finals was on a Tuesday. I skipped it because I had too much studying to do.

It's not just the sports side of the college world that's responsible. The idea that "every kid needs a college education" is driving some of the bloat. All the grant and loan programs have freed universities from ever having to worry about empty seats. Any enterprise that's assured of selling everything it produces gets fat and lazy, and overbuilds.

I suspect growth in the availability and credibility of online learning, and specialized vocational training created by industry to fill gaps left by traditional institutions will be two forces encouraging a return to sanity. There is real value in brick-&-mortar educational institutions, especially for students who work better in groups, but the higher education industry needs to get out of the weeds and back on the path.

Colleges will tell you (as will K12 school districts) that facilities and amenities are what attract students, and that colleges compete with each other in this regard. There is probably some truth to that argument, and such "infrastructure" spending might be justifiable if the colleges actually produced more than bogus "research" and poorly educated students carrying the insanely expensive pieces of paper that they supposedly need to enter the workforce.

The student loan debt and public funds which are used to finance the glamorous digs are a problem only for the students, not the institutions spending the money.

The president of OSU is an ass.

He just turned off a HUGE segment of potential donors by making an asinine, bigoted, statement. There is no real upside to his stupidity and when it becomes apparent to the board what he has done, there will inevitably be repercussions.

What...no pay raise?

Reynolds Law (Glenn Reynolds) states:
Subsidizing the markers of status doesn’t produce the character traits that result in that status; it undermines them.

In other words:
The government decides to try to increase the middle class by subsidizing things that middle class people have: If middle-class people go to college and own homes, then surely if more people go to college and own homes, we’ll have more middle-class people. But homeownership and college aren’t causes of middle-class status, they’re markers for possessing the kinds of traits — self-discipline, the ability to defer gratification, etc. — that let you enter, and stay, in the middle class. Subsidizing the markers doesn’t produce the traits; if anything, it undermines them.

My wife will just laugh. She hates THE OSU because she still can't forgive them for Woody Hayes. :D A coach striking an opposing player just isn't cool.

Gee did manage to tick off a lot of people and give a great university an entirely undeserved black eye. His comments do not reflect the opinions of the faculty, students or staff of Ohio State. And he doesn't make 2 million a year. Sorry. Football coach might, not so sure.

I am truly disappointed at the denigrating comments being made at the expense of OSU and universities elsewhere. Most only reflect the ignorance of their sources.

You gotta admit, it's still fun to get one in on Kentucky though.

Okay, he makes north of a million a year, that's not the point. The point is that he should be held to a standard at least as high as everyone else at the school, and that's either not the case, or the standards for respect and decency at OSU are way too low.

The problems with higher education (and public education in particular) are well-documented. Higher education is nothing but a highly unionized big business, special interest lobby that never misses an opportunity to use the government to its advantage, and makes most of its money by driving a large number of its customers into a giant debt hole while producing a below-average product. There are some colleges that are more responsible, but they are few and far between.

In my inbox just minutes ago:

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GEE

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:
I write today to acknowledge some statements I made last December in a poor attempt at humor. I am deeply sorry for the discomfort I caused, which was wholly unintentional, to members of the Athletic Council and others present in the room at the time of my comments. More broadly, I want to apologize to all who were offended by my remarks, to the University community, and to our entire Ohio State family.
Quite simply, there is no excuse for my comments, which in no way reflect the core values of our University.

Sincerely,
E. Gordon Gee
President

There are some professors at The Ohio State University that seem to take the same shots at the same people the president of the university did. Some even post them on this very forum.

College as we know it is about to change in the way that books as we know them have changed.

The value of a brand takes decades to build, but just days to damage badly. Penn State's former president helped demonstrate that.

Alumni, students and faculty of a university are all invested in its brand, and at Ohio State they should be outraged at the damage this idiot has done to their brand.

I don't expect him to last another month.

Why would ANYBODY be surprised that you are all up in arms because people see the stupidity of the OSU president as stupidity?

Just because someone works in the academic world, does not make them better than everybody else.

When one looks at the lies of the academic community with regard to MMGW, you see a pattern of stupidity, ego and desperation to feel important.

When you look at the bigoted idiocy of the current, (but maybe not for much longer) president of OSU, you see a mypoic, ego driven, bigot, who stepped on his thing, and got caught.

And he doesn't make 2 million a year. Sorry. Football coach might, not so sure.

From THE OSU Campus newspaper, The Lantern.

"President E. Gordon Gee sits at the top of the newly released list of the nation’s highest paid public university presidents, earning a salary shy of $2 million in the 2011 fiscal year."

He may or may not be worth it but the paper says he was only about $8k short of $2 million in total compensation. Didn't even count his entertainment allowance or housing or cars or memberships or whatever other perks he is entitled to and may well deserve. Don't know about this year but I doubt he will be receiving a bonus in the $300K range as he did in 2011 after reading the letter from the Trustees about the "remarks".

Stupidity Virus outbreak more virulent that first diagnosed

E Gordon Gee, recently afflicted by the University President Stupidity Virus, apparently is suffering from a more virulent version that previously detected.

In "remarks", Gee called the former head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers a "thug" and threatened to shoot THE OSU Athletic Director if the University of Cincinnati, an in state school, was admitted to the B1G Ten Conference.

Gee was attended to by a group of THE OSU Trustees who applied a palliative in an attempt to control future outbreaks. Some have suggested Gee may have tightened his trademark Bow Tie too aggressively and choked off part of the blood flow to his brain aggravating the condition.

Gee remains fully in control of his faculties, such as they are while fighting the virus, and THE faculty.

The President of The State University of New Jersey remains in guarded condition benefiting from the age old remedy of "When the heats on somebody else, it's not on you."

Gee bailed out of Colorado U at Boulder chasing the bigger bucks at OSU. His departure from Univ Colo left a very bad taste in folks around here.

I went to one of the founding schools of the Big Ten. You won't find our football program talked about anymore, because we dropped out. Robert Maynard Hutchins, the President of the College in the thirties, felt that the sports were too disruptive to the prime mission of the College, Teaching. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-forgotten-big-10-member-the-chicago-marroons

Coincidentally, William Rainey Harper was the first President of the University of Chicago. There is a college in the Chicago area named after him that just shut down their football program last year, though more for financial reasons than for ideological ones.

odd that the education industry doesn't lose their minds over Gee explicitly threatening gun violence against another school president, when children are attacked for chewing their pop tart in a way IMAGINED to look like a rifle. :mad2::mad2:

Aww c'mon... they tore out the tennis courts for a bison shaped useless swimming pool that will be iced over during the school year!

CU even since he left, has completely lost its mind... recent athletic director firing included... they don't have a damn clue what they want that school to be known for, other than a giant 4-20 day every year.
