Potty solutions for cross country

I did get a good laugh with this topic. I mentioned it to my bride and she oh hell no to any device. Our rule was three hour legs, which also was good for stretching the legs. Never had an issue and the marriage is still going strong after 20+ years flying. Now I will say that if she was asleep I would push to 3.5 hours 4 if she was really in dreamland.

Yet another reason GA is not adequate for long distance traveling.
It also depends on what you consider long distance and long time in the plane.

My frame of reference is mostly time and how tiring it is driving vs flying.

Commercial vs GA? ATL to Chicago area it’s faster door to door vs commercial. And a lot more convenient.

ATL to LA in my 182? To me, that’s too long.

Then again, wife and I are retired. We have more options to enjoy the trip vs must be there at a specific time.

Only $6400. I love that the male version comes in two sizes: XL and Magnum
When I saw the “2 sizes”, the first thing I thought was, “I bet they always sell out of the Large.” Then I saw the “XL” and “Magnum”!

We are planning a long cross-country trip with grandkids. Planning to do shorter legs, but want to have a backup plan for potty emergencies. Any preferred solutions for 3-10 year old kids? Prefer discreet and avoiding leaks.

How about a plastic coffee can, or something with a screw on lid, and stuff an inside out adult diaper in the bottom? Single use, toss used wipes in it, seal it up and chuck it out the window.

Boys or girls? If boys, at that age they're mostly feral anyway so have empty bottles (with caps), lots of sanitizing wipes and a few rolls of paper towels. If girls, you're landing.

Travel John, that's what I use, neat, no spill, but you have to make sure it's eh, properly positioned. Generally with AP engaged, and in smooth air is my requirement. My wife refuses to use them, but probably would in a pinch. I limit legs to about 3 hours, her limit most days. I refuse to do the dehydration thing, just not a good idea in my opinion. Would probably work for kids too, with proper instruction. I don't like pee in a bottle and the potential of it ending up where it shouldn't, but that's me.

Every time I go anywhere, I have to think about different ways to get there. Every one of them has pros and cons, which vary depending on the trip. Some of the trips that I fly myself on could be accomplished by airline, train, or automobile, with various compromises.

I do have one recurring trip that I just wouldn't do without my own plane, because the airlines cost more, take longer, and require me to put my dogs in boarding for long periods of time, driving would take 3+ days each way with my family's level of enthusiasm for road trips, and the train doesn't even go that way.

Our average logbook entry for that trip is 6.5 hours each way, split about 60/40 with a single fuel stop.

My wife and I were having a good time last night discussing this thread, timely as it was - we had just gotten home from the Bay Area in the RV. She gives a big thumbs up to preventive hydration management with occasional limited sips of water en route. It worked well on both trips. Plus we don’t do more than 3 hours or so legs anyway for fuel and general “time for a break” reasons. This is supposed to be fun!

For the really inventive - or desperate - ones out there, perhaps some sort of Bear Grylls setup?

You know you're a real pilot when you can hand fly in turbulence, talk to ATC, and pee in a bottle at the same time.
How many points do you loose if you... umm... miss?

This topic hits hard. I was with a passenger 2 weeks ago on a 2.5 hour leg and they had to go bad so I set it down at Livingston Municipal (00R) north of Houston. Public restroom door LOCKED. Luckily a dude had his hangar home open and let us use it.

I had a 6 min flight once from KFRG to KISP to go check out an avionics shop. My then girlfriend, who had flown a lot with me, opted not to go to the restroom before we departed.... Did she ever dart for the restroom when we pulled up to the shop. :D

If ATC doesn’t give you a phone number, then you still get full points. But if you get a Brasher warning for your aim, please post the LiveATC link.

I’m unfortunately probably on more than one small airport’s security ring camera video “discreetly” using a creative spot when their restroom was locked.

I used to do 5 hour plus flights single pilot in a PC-12. Two words: strategic dehydration. :)
