Unless it is a horrible tail wind, I have always accepted a downwind landing to put the sun behind me.

Hard to watch, for sure. RIP.

Had a T6 landing close behind me once. I knew he was there, and it was not at sunset, but still a little unnerving. I landed long and rolled to the end of the runway, just in case he needed the room. He didn’t.

I'm actually surprised at the manner of the explosion. Didn't seem that energetic a collision to ignite tanks like that.

Maybe it was at an intersection and T-boned the Cesena's wing. Very sad

Landing, or any flying into the sun is an "interesting" proposition. That's an awful and pretty sad video, but I'm guessing the T-28 never saw the Cessna until it was far too late.

I learned to fly at an airport with the runway aligned into a (smoggy) setting sun. It ain't easy, and the flicker effect from a slow-turning prop makes it even more of a challenge.

KCPM has no tower, and has two closely-spaced parallel runways, that share the traffic pattern on the south side of the airport (left traffic for both 25L&R, right traffic for both 7L&R).

I hope that the CTAF was recorded somewhere; regardless, "see and avoid" failed.

And of course the idiot that caused the crash is uninjured. I'm generally not one for lawsuits, but if you can afford to own a T28, you can afford the lawsuit coming your way. Pretty sure this crash is a textbook definition of "reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another", so hopefully the FAA will have a close look at his continued ability to fly.

Here is the student that got killed ... actually standing in front of the very plane.

That’s a terrible thing to say. I hope you don’t ever have an accident. Some a hole might just sue you.

    T-28 isn’t an expensive airplane.

Even though it’s a trike, forward visibility in a T28 is poor, like most radial engine singles. If there was a communication failure for any reason it may be hard to pin blame. See and avoid has failure points. One of them is the stabilized approach in airplanes with poor visibility forward and down at approach speeds. From the video it looks like the 28 was fast and flat so maybe could see. Who knows.

I fly two radial engine taildraggers. In one I can’t see the runway in the stabilized configuration. Except at a towered field, I fly 180s. In the other I fly a little faster than ideal, then lose the Touchdown zone when I slow down over the fence. If there is an airplane holding I’m paying lots of attention to it.

It is pretty clear to me that the T28 Pilot never saw the Cessna ... wonder if he was even aware that there was another plane in the pattern landing ahead of him - this looks like very unfortunate and total breakdown in communications ...

About as terrible as landing on top of another plane killing one and injuring the other because he wasn't paying attention? For the record, I also hope I never have an accident, and should I have one, I hope it's not due to my own reckless and negligent behavior.

How can you possibly know the pilot was reckless and negligent. That’s a mighty arrogant position to take at this point.

Your comments are ignorant, uniformed and judgmental. If that’s how you want to be it’s your choice. I hope you’re never on the receiving end of such reckless disdain.

Well, he did land on a runway occupied by another plane and ended up causing a deadly accident, that much is pretty clear , even at this early stage .... sounds pretty reckless and negligent to me.

It seems a helmet, NOMEX flight suite and gloves could have prevented such horrible injury. This "dress code" (plus wearing a parachute on the back) is required for RPA formation clinique and gatherings.
When I start flying formation 10 years ago with my RPA buddies, I wear the NOMEX flight suite more often then I do now. This makes me think twice. However, I never wear NOMEX suite when I don't fly formation. If such a unfortunate happened to me when I not flying formation, I probably won't get a way with it neither. :frown3:

You are assuming a lot. The Cessna was in his blind spot and directly into the sun, spotting visually was difficult to impossible. We don't know yet why both were on the same runway. Possibly a com failure, possibly one thought the other was using the parallel runway.

Either way, I'm sure they will have plenty of guilt regardless of fault. So chill Richard.

Well, Richard , whatever happened he landed on top of another plane with the plane being right in front of him - another glorious example of see and avoid ... no need for stinking communications as long as you have you head out there ...blah blah ..
