Howdy gang,
I am asking for a friend... really, I am. I don't even own a Piper.

If someone needed to locate a clevis pin to replace a broken one on a PA28's cowl latch, any thoughts for a source? The pin is the small 3/32 inch one which acts as a hinge on the latch assembly. Piper only sells the latch as a complete assembly. The plane currently has all four latches installed with clevis pins. Cotter pins hold them in place as pictured below.

He has been looking but can't find standard hardware with pins less than 3/16 of an inch. As always, any info is appreciated.

The PMA section of Harbor Freight sells an assortment of pins that work great. That's just what I've been told.... (cough)

Hmmm. Mcmaster only appears to go down to 1/8 inch. Just a silly 32nd too large.
I assume said friend measured accurately?

Probably going to be easier in the long run to switch to a 3/32" sholder bolt and a lock nut, or a pair of them, depending on total length required on the latch. 3/32" clevis pins are probably custom for Piper, as they aren't an AN/MS standard diameter. If you are really picky, McMaster has custom lengths available at ok prices.
3/32" shank with a 5/32" head diameter:

Mighty close to 2.5mm, though all I've found at that size are brass.
I do have a lathe, which sometimes makes parts for me.

Are you sure its not 1/8"? I seem to recall they would use an AN392 type clevis pin to repair that??

I think this is what you are looking for.

Thanks everyone for the info! I will go back and remeasure to see if I really messed up that badly. I pushed a 1/8" drill to the hole in the bracket and didn't think it went in. I then used a 3/32" drill and it fit in the hole in the bracket. But, now I am really questioning if I did it correctly. Stay tuned and I'll report back.

Yep. I don't know how to measure diameter correctly. I checked again yesterday and, sure enough, I did not measure correctly the first time. It is 1/8 inch diameter. Thanks everyone for the assist!

I’m glad you are able to address this. Wear and rust often take a toll on

these items. IMHO they are CRITICAL items as the glass the glass cowlings

have a LONG history of “ Separations”. Not delaminating; the top cowl

departs and often damages windshields and flight controls while doing so.

Maintenance IS required!

McMaster and Grainger has those clevis in stock. And, likely has the cotter pin to hold it as well.

Thanks Low Level! You link was spot on. Much appreciated!

Yep. I'll have him take a careful look at the other three and get his mechanic involved.
