One of the things I try to get through to students is to start with the correct fizzicks. A polynomial or exponential can be coerced into fitting data from an inverse relationship over an interval, but in the end you get stupid results.
If you plot force vs. torque at a fixed distance, you get a straight line. Force vs. distance at a fixed torque, you get the inverse relation with an asymptote at zero.
 
This math stuff is giving me tired head. Back to My Cousin Vinny references.
