Flipped during taxi, after landing? Interested to hear the cause of this one.

Have to take what the local news says with a pound of salt. When they first reported it they said that the plane landed in the marsh short of the runway and had 4 people onboard. Now it flipped during taxi with 2 onboard.

True, at least at this early point. I saw they changed the report from 4 to 2 people on board, but didn't see the part about the swamp.

"Patty Wagstaff, a world-renowned flight instructor"

That's interesting. How does one become world-renowned for flight instruction?

No sooner than I posted that, and they edited the story.

The title was changed from: “Flight instructor Patty Wagstaff's plane flips during landing in St. Augustine” to “Stunt pilot Patty Wagstaff's plane flips during landing in St. Augustine.

The first line (which is what I was commenting on) was changed from “Patty Wagstaff, a world-renowned flight instructor …” to “Patty Wagstaff, a world-renowned flight instructor and stunt pilot …”

They also added a quote from her Tweet:

"After the accident, she posted a message on Twitter saying the plane had a mechancial issue:

We had a mechanical problem in our V Tail Bonanza after landing a St Augustine this evening. People have been asking and I wanted to let everyone know that my passenger (one of our instructors) are doing fine. — Patty Wagstaff (@pattyaerobatics) September 11, 2019"

What kind of mechanical breakdown puts you on your back during taxi of a Bo?

Only thing I can think of is throttle cable breaks, engine spools up and ya gotta find a ditch or something to stop the plane

Well, she did not say there was a mechanical "breakdown", nor did she say that it caused the plane to flip.

Her exact words: "We had a mechanical problem in our V Tail Bonanza after landing a St Augustine this evening." Nothing more.

If I managed to flip my plane over on the ground, I'd bet that could cause a "mechanical problem."

Kinda feel just a bit sorry for Patty Wagstaff. Burden of celebrity. For all we know the Bo got caught in a wingtip vortex or a microburst and got flipped. But because it's Patty Wagstaff its news and oh she must have done something wrong. And the poor thing can't even speak her mind because it'll get twisted all out of proportion and context.

I'm just glad both the pilots are OK, and I hope the Bo can be made all better. They're really beautiful things.

I can't believe you said that!

    Because I agree with you.

When I clicked the link and read the account of Patty getting arrested, the only think I could think of was the saying:'

'Nice girls don't make history". Patty is a history maker. She didn't get there by following all the rules and being safe and polite.

My concern when reading of the arrest was not so much being polite, as drunks being belligerent when arrested is fairly commonplace, but rather the original offense.

Did I understand correctly that she was driving fast while intoxicated down the runway at night in an area which would be crowded with people?

A broken nose gear rod end could do it.

Every video of a nose gear collapse I've seen resulted in the nose on the ground but not flipped over. Of course, one might wonder at how such an important part got to the point of catastrophic failure with no one noticing.

they are saying...."steering rod"...not a nose wheel collapse. I'm not believing that though.

The kind of mechanical failure than can result in a flipped airplane is the kind that can cause the airplane to depart the runway and veer into a marsh. From there, imagination is probably good enough to fill in the rest.

    Intoxicated? Yup.
    Fast? Well, everything is relative.
    Down the runway? Yup.
In an area crowded with people? Nope. There's an astonishing amount of clear area between the runways and the people. Every spot where runways and people "meet" there are at least two taxiways in between, with lots of buffer area... After all, the airplanes go much faster than Patty's vehicle and they don't want one of those getting in an accident and injuring people either.

I guess I assumed the incident involved a golf cart. Was it an actual vehicle?
