Hi all,

We've come to the end of our Kevlar oxygen tank's life, and the shop is telling us we should overhaul the regulator as well. However, they've given us some ridiculous quotes on this, so we're looking into it separately.

What is required as far as overhauling this stuff? When does it need to be done, who can do it?

Thanks!

Typically, the regulator will be torn down, everything cleaned and inspected and all seals, the diaphragm and maybe the spring will be replaced as well, depending on the age, then reassembled and tested. Have a brand and model number handy?

I believe you have a 5 year overhaul interval mandated by the manufacturer’s Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA). Components must be returned with an FAA Form 8130-3 to ensure airworthiness. If the unit is an Avox the cost maybe $1,000 from Avox.

When the high-pressure system is opened, the lines must be cleaned to oxygen-service standards (e.g., ASTM G93) and purged to remove residual moisture and gases, but most GA piston aircrsft do not require this.
