I was watching the display planes leave yesterday on the livestream after the air show, and a plane ran off the end of 18. Fire trucks took off to help and airport was closed down. Anyone know anything more about the incident?

How crowded was it on the days you were there? On Saturday it was shoulder-to-shoulder. Most of the week was crowded, but Saturday was jammed.
Saturday was jammed, for sure, but not in the north 40, or in the warbirds area. A lot of folks had already left. The crowd was definitely a high-percentage ground influx.

Didn't dwindle this year. It's just an infrequent occurrence.
From the live streams it certainly looked a bit less crowded; a few IFR mornings thanks to the wildfires slowed down the streams. I imagine many gave up and drove.

Well, from being there and being involved in parking the aircraft (at least in Vintage and directing those to the South 40), I can tell you that as soon as the field went VFR, all that pent-up demand showed up quickly. In fact, much of the crying attendees are doing about the arrival procedure is directly attributed to this backlog release.

Yeah, I watched online; I'm talking about the total number of planes parked. Many more empty spaces, throughout the week.
Quite a train of incoming when the weather cooperated.

Not sure what empty spaces you were talking about. We were pretty tight. The Commanche's had a bit type club event this year so that space got blocked out (we release it on the Monday of the show). Things were packed oddly due to the goofy pioneers of flight exhibit that was still getting built when the things started to fill in. Stop calling that abomination a Wright replica.

wake me up when the EAA returns to it Expirimental roots. EAA shouldn't tl allow certified anything as thats not the goal of the EXPERIMENTAL aircraft association IMHO

But...the reason I became a member is because the EAA has done more for General Aviation in my time as a pilot than any other organization. And, based on some reading in other posts around here I strongly believe that the future of GA is experimentals.
