Operating temp question

I stand by adding a quart or more on hot days making it run cooler. It's very noticeable on initial climb how much slower the temp rises

Right. I'll explain it better since apparently I didn't, normally I'd run that O320 equipped 172 no higher than 6.5. On smoking hot days I'd add at least one quart if not filling it to full capacity of 8, especially if climbing high and/or a longer trip.
 
We had a rule with our plane: all flights start with oil at the top level. Of course, you pretty much cannot overheat an 0300.
