As a side question, are the instructors usually paid 30%, 40%, or how much of what the schools are charging the students?

Plus One's rates in San Diego are pretty good.. huge fleet and fair rentals

    https://www.plusoneflyers.org/fleet/montgomery-fleet

First plane on that page is a 172N renting for $90 an hour wet

**I think what you have to find is a place that's more of a club than a school. The schools want their airplanes flying and making money and know that people there have monster loans or rich parents so they can charge whatever they want from their captive audience..

At Plus One you rent the instructor separately and the instructor keeps 100% of the rate they charge

The place I got my ticket from was run more like a mom-n-pop operation....because it was. The owner was also the A&P, and did all his maintenance. He, himself, his wife, and his daughter all worked part-time there as well behind the front desk, and they had a number of hangers at the airport that they (I assume) sublet to others. Availability wasn't phenomenal, but not bad by any means. This guy, I think, truly had a passion for the flying/plane part of it all, and I doubt he was in it for the millions....I guess I just got lucky in finding that place.

South of Atlanta I only pay $85 an hour wet for a 1978 180HP 172 with 2 G5s, G430 WAAS, Lynx 9000, and an STEC 30 autopilot with altitude hold and GPSS, but it is a club plane.

I think that's the big difference, club vs school

Leading edge aviation in Doylestown, PA. Probably about an hour from Northern NJ, depending on where you are. Their website has their fleet and prices, 172s vfr @$108 and ifr @ $118. I used to instruct there, Good people, 3000ft runway, light traffic. Northern NJ??... good luck, I made my escape from NJ to NC 10 years ago and have never looked back.

Maybe the wet rate refers to rainy days. ;)

By cheaping out on maintenance, usually. Just watch the threads on inflight failures of all sorts on some rental stuff. This may not be true in RGBeard's case, but the fact remains that aviation is not cheap, and low rental prices are usually too good to be safe.

Yeah, there are places like that, but they love aviation too much to leave it. They could make far more money in other places for less work, responsibility and hassle, but they might not have fun doing it.

No profit, and club dues that add to the end cost.

I had a fixed gear Cessna 182 on leaseback once...lost my shirt. I was subsidizing other peolple's flying. Try owning an airplane...ain't cheap!!
Especially with the FBO taking a huge cut!

That's an amazing rate! Congrats. The club rate I have for a 180 HP 172 is $135. But that is SO much cheaper than the rental rates at the schools around here.

No idea....I've been locked in the house for the last year.
After googling, I guess it would be either 159 or 160, depending on personal preference.
