Newark Mishap

EWR has been a disaster for the last 6 months. Someone's gonna have to get hurt for the tombstone agency to fix staffing.

VASAviation has published this incident.

The controllers seemed to think that a 737 can fly as slow on final as an E175. It can't.

The incident has nothing to do with staffing…

If you can’t handle the load, and accept more than you can safely deal with… especially due to “pressure”… uh… the problem is DECISION MAKING.

Idiots would tell me all the time to fly through a thunderstorm. My DECISION MAKING prevented that from happening.

If you can’t recognize you’re overtasked… well, maybe we take it a step further back in time and question whomever’s suitability for the job at all.

But ya, it’s gonna take a mishap to wake them up…

Not sure why there's a couple of paragraphs about TSA funding at the end of this article, other than the fact that AI has replaced editors at the Post.
No marginal harm, no foul. The AI was trained on previous Post articles.

TCAS was part of my crosscheck even as PF on final. Especially at places like EWR etc. I wonder if I might have recognized the problem earlier.

What if they both had recognized it earlier and both had decided to go around. That could have been an adventure.

My CFII a few months ago mentioned something about TEB being under the control of Philly ARTCC and opined that it was a terrible change. Could that have anything to do with this situation?

There is no Philly ARTCC. There is only ZNY / the New York ARTCC. What did happen a bit back was that control of EWR moved from NY tracon in Long Island to the Philadelphia tracon. I think they lost a good bit of staff from people not willing to make that move. They’ve also been plagued with IT issues in routing all the data to the new facility that has resulted in radio and radar outages.

The idea was that they'd have better luck getting new controllers willing to work in Philly than in Long Island. They had even tried local L.I. advertisements for new controller applicants. I don't know if that has worked but it's far too early for any new-hires, hired since the move, to have reached full performance level in Philly.

The controller was working two, possibly three, combined sectors. If they had had more staffing, those sectors could have been split off to reducer her workload.

I don't drive by Newark very often, but every time I do, the aircraft lined up for landing reminds me of the scene with Lucy and the assembly line of chocolates. They're just stacked up in a line in the air coming in. When I visit Boston I stay over in the harbor opposite Logan, and to my untrained eye Newark makes Boston look like a small town airport. Just my random observations from somebody living in the sleepy little town of Albany...and no sarcasm intended in that.

Yeah, Boston doesn't have near the traffic Newark does. Sometimes they'll do arrivals on different runways as well based on aircraft type. And they tend to cross.

@AKiss20 thanks for the clarification. As I was writing it, I couldn't remember if it was an ARTCC or a TRACON. I've heard of the IT issues. ATC is so very behind the times in terms of technology. I know the current Secretary is pushing hard to upgrade things. Opposing Bases has spoken on this a few times recently. Apparently the area in which AG works is going to be one of the first test beds?

I live out in the sticks about 35 miles from DFW, and I have a clear view of flights on one of the STAR arrivals at night. It's pretty cool to see those stairstepped lights at rigid intervals spaced out across the sky.
