Just received this email from my avionics shop. It doesn't really interest me, especially near $3K installed. But maybe I'm missing something here regarding altitude awareness that smarter pilots than me (i.e., flying for much heavier and capable equipment) have determined it's necessary for safer low instrument approaches and departures? Thoughts?

"I am emailing you because you had at least (1) GI275 installed in your aircraft.
There is a new product from Garmin called the GHA15. The GHA 15 Height Advisor offers an above-ground-level (AGL) altitude reference. It brings radar-based accuracy, aural callouts and visual height indication. This system can interface to your existing GI275(s)."

Here is a link to the Garmin advertisement: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1339678/

I saw that a month or two ago and had the same thought. In a spam can, should be able to judge height visually.

So a boat depth finder for planes? Could be useful depending on mission, or for extra peace of mind (VFR into IMC?).

"Fly with precise AGL reference, especially in areas where current baro altimeter settings aren’t available."

The MicroKit LHS200B does the same thing, and doesn't rely on a GI275-or even require a GPS input. You just need to connect it to a switched input on your audio panel. The LHS200C can connect to the landing gear system to alert of gear still up at 200' AGL. $1200 for the box.

Like the idea of an aural warning as you get closer to the ground ,can be a big help for those flying IFR.

In my situation, I get enough distracting "Bitching Betty" aural warnings around the house (wife's name is Betty) before leaving for the airport. Sometimes silence is golden.

However, depending upon how an aural cockpit alert is programed and delivered, a couple of warnings set up to hear at the right time and place could be beneficial. Including a "lower gear" reminder.

The one area I could see this being helpful is seaplane ops. But I've heard they don't work on smooth water. Don't know if the Garmin has that issue or not

Add this feature along with some collision avoidance similar to what my vehicle has ... except instead of stopping and turning it would go full throttle and max climb ...

Somehow I manage to roll on buttery smooth greasers without the product. That sounds kinda nasty now that I have reread it, but full send.

There is a group-buy going on now on BT for these if anyone interested. Pretty good discount.

The Garmin device looks nice, but like anything Garmin, they are proud of their products.

The group buy is for $950. I jumped on it for the gear warning. It may possibly pay for itself with reduced insurance premiums…..maybe.

One of my buds has a LIDAR unit installed on his Comanche. Does readouts from 200' to touchdown kind of cool. Don't think there was any insurance premium break for installing it.

I would hope that, for a retract, the gear position warning may be viewed as a positive with the underwriter. However they will probably say “Good for you, now go eat your biscuit.”
