"BRC 18650 4200mAh 3.7V li-ion" from a picatinny mounted night lamp.
Cheapie that came with no way to charge the battery.
Its about 2&1/2in long and 5/8in dia.

I could buy a charger but I have all these USB-A and -C chargers around, anyone think they would provide a useful (safe) charge?
(I can rig up a connector once I strip the cable I'm sure)

To be precise, it's 18mm dia and 65.0mm long, hence the name "18650".

Cruise the e-waste bins for a discarded battery bank with USB in/out. Crack it open and dispose (or re-use) the li-ion battery, then hotwire into the remaining charge controller.

Or you could just take the easy route and buy one of these.

Sadly, that is your best option.
Otherwise you'd need (at a minimum) an adjustable power supply (voltage and current) and a timer.

One other option, cheaper per unit, but you have to buy more than one and needs some soldering, is to use a TP4058 charging board. As a bonus, it has a protected output that prevents short-circuits and over-discharging.

1. buy a proper 18650 charger, unless you like fires and your home insurance is paid up
2. don't buy cheap sweatshop-to-landfill crap to begin with
