Is there something better than standard windshield glass?
I’m thinking I need to look into bullet proof.
My truck has about 15 serious chips in it and some have progressed into tremendous linear cracks at 55K mi.

These arise from two events;
1. People passing me then cutting back into my lane way too soon, too close. (I travel the speed limit.)
2. Oncoming vehicles, usually 18-wheelers randomly kicking road crap at me.

I have to fault the NHTSA for failing to mandate mud guards but they have fallen short in several ways recently.

is there a coating option that one can get to minimize stone damage?

I hear your pain. With the rise of the SUV and the lack of mudflaps on them, my and my wife's windshields rarely last a year without some sort of ding.

At least you're not driving the freeways and highways around Seattle. I have a perfectly round palm-sized crack in my truck's windshield. Some junkie living in a junkie camp off I-5 in the U-district chucked a rock at me. Not an uncommon occurrence around here. Sounded like a gunshot. Another couple ounces of weight or a few more mph and the rock would have made it through.

I feel like the glass in my current car is softer than it should be...... I have been very careful to not follow close, etc.... and at 30k miles it has notable pitting. Nothing serious and no significant chips, but still..... oh, and the time I tried wiping some stuff off while the car was on, and my hand/rag triggered the auto wipers... the wipers jumped up and grabbed my rag before I could get out of the way, resulting in popping the blade off....which resulted in the arm sweeping bare across the glass leaving a nice little scratch...and some foul language being unleashed.
I managed to polish out the scratch...and I suppose any windshield would likely scratch form that....still it just seems soft and I'd like to have something more durable.

Don't think there's anything tougher. Best bet if you see a chip or crack is to repair it immediately. Those stupid repair kits actually work. Had a half roller size spider web crack and now I REALLY have to look to find it.

You need to get the chips and small starbursts ground and filled before they progress into larger cracks. My insurance company covers this with no deductible. They just send the safelite guy out to do it.

Pilkington.

I think SafeLight uses very soft glass. They do not seem to last very long.

Pilkington glass is used by BMW for original equipment. I had to replace the windshield on my 2002 BMW and I went with Pilkington and it is holding up very well.

Same here. Zero deductible on comprehensive is worth the slightly higher premiums that I pay.

True dat. In my area as there is a tremendous about of construction and constant road work going on. Easy to get a windshield chipped or cracked around these parts. I call and they install ...

Jeep Wranglers have an option for Gorilla Glass for the windshields. Same company that makes cell phone glass. Might become more popular if there is demand.
