Cowboy - yeehah!
Today is the day of sweet victory. I see the truck outside, and they are going to pump away!

I have generally very good neighbors whom I get along with very well, with one exception. Three doors down and across the street from me is a family of turd-burglers and that has caused some grief in the past. Going back almost 15 years, two of the kids from that family got caught in my motorhome one day vandalizing it. the cops wrote up the report, and it was sent to the county PA, but I agreed not to prosecute if they paid the cost of renovation back to original condition, and had the kids apologize. Maybe it was a mistake.

FF to a year ago, and they started having trouble with their anaerobic septic system. I'm sort of downwind to them so once in a while I get a whiff when I'm working outside on cars, or in my hot tub at night. He timed his sprinkler to only run from 1am to 4am.

I had a discussion with the owner about it and he said there was nothing wrong. It got worse, another neighbor complained so I went over and took a sample of his discharge water when the septic sprinkler was running from the edge of the street. I asked once again that he have it pumped, and have the effluent lines cleaned and repaired. He refused. The neighbor next to me talked to him because they have a slightly better rapport. He still blew it off. I sent the sample to a lab, and the report to the district water control authority. They came out last week and sampled as well and then cited him with a nice penalty. If he didn't clean it up within 72 hours, they were going to shut down his septic, and he wouldn't be able to live there.

Well, the guy pushed it to the last second, but the truck is out there now, and it's being pumped. I presume they are going to flush it, and then try again. It pains me to have to go to this extreme but I put up with it for almost a year with polite requests, however some neighbors only respond to actions from the govt, rather than being a good neighbor. Looks like what would have cost him a few hundred last year is going to be quite a bit more expensive now, including the cost of the violation for discharging raw waste.

Of course - he blames me. He's the victim here. lol

Glad the gov't came through for ya.

I know! :yesnod: It was all I could do to fix it myself and finally had to go govt on his butt. What a shame. I guess I could have been a real jackbanana and sued him in civil court. Meh - I wish it didn't have to be so, but property rights are pretty important in my state. Either that, or we could just go over and demolish his place and see what he does about it.

Kinda hard to leave flaming bag of dog poo on his porch when he is a nuclear power.

Since I'm often up very late, I was considering a little human anal gift on his porch, but it's not my way. I prefer to get along with folks if they would just cooperate a smidge. Back when his kids broke into my motorhome he accurately pointed out that RV type vehicles parked out need to be behind a fence. It was behind a fence, but the top few inches were visible from the street if you drove by in a truck.

Cracks me up that you called them turd-burglars. Sounds like they were turd exporters.

Having to deal with a neighbor like that just stinks. Sorry couldn't resist :) Hopefully, the situation will just go down the drain.

I have a neighbor like this. A hoarder. Fortunately everything stays in the house but I'm waiting for the day it won't.

I was just out for my late night stroll, and the system is nearly empty so no effluent spray for a while.

Ah - it was nice out. I guess we'll wait until it gets up to the fluid line and runs the pump before I find out if it's really fixed. While the truck was out there I had them come over and give me an estimate for draining my tanks and I'll have him come back later and drain me off.

What's a septic sprinkler? I hope to god it's not what it sounds like, that's just nasty.

A straight flush beats a full house.

Yup, it is exactly what you think it is. The septic effluent is separated into two tanks. The effluent tank is non-solids. The water/sludge is flowed over or through a stack of chlorine, like a pool cholrinator and then it's let sit for a while, and finally it's pumped to sprinklers and out on the lawn. I mistakenly called it 'anaerobic' up above but it's an aerobic system that requires air to be pumped into the tank for the bacteria to digest the waste.

I have an anaerobic system but he has one with the air pump and sprinkler. Usually, there's no problem with them as the solid wastes are pumped out to the truck often enough. However, if they let it fill up, and don't maintain the pump then the air doesn't get the waste digested, and it starts stinking like you know what.

Chortle. My house I lived in for 23 years had a dual-septic field which you had to throw a valve to change fields every year. The thing also was up hill from the house so there was a pump chamber after the tank that separated the solids out. There were redundant pumps but if the level rose past a certain point in the tank a rauchous bell would sound which we termed the "Deep S--t" alarm because that's what it was.

Was he seriously trying to say that because it was possible to see the RV, it was OK to vandalise it?

How do most neighbors handle sewage in your neighborhood?
Sounds like no town system. Do most have an ordinary septic tank and leach field?
That method has worked well for hundreds of years; is his a newly invented wheel, I don't think I've heard of it.

Not that I can think of. He was just being the south end of a north facing horse.

We are all on min 2 acre lots. Most lots are 2.5 to 5 acres and there is no waste sewer system, all septic tanks. I have a pair of tanks and a leach field, but this one house has the newer aerobic with aeriator and sprinkler. I think there's another one like it a block away cause I see his sprinkler come on late at night sometimes. His lot is the smallest around so he may not have room for a conventional leach field.

His direct upwind neighbor next door has a pool and I recall some commentary when the house was built that the neighbor with the pool objected to his planned leach field location, but I can't recall the details.

newer aerobic with aeriator and sprinkler.

Yet another thing to include in the homeowners' CC&R document. Sounds nasty.
I'm all for new things....except when it's painfully obvious how the old way is miles better!

Septic systems are interesting things. Seems like some people go 20+ years without touching them and others are pumping them yearly.

Some people put only ****, poop, and toilet paper in them...others, maybe not so limited and that is a very bad thing

Tank size also matters along with leach field soil type

Which reminds me, I should do it soon. But I have a huge tank, only one person, and I'm careful about what I put down there. I think I had it pumped at about 7-8 years last time and the guy said it wasn't even close to being full. It's been about 15 years since then. I keep putting it off every year...

We've been in our house for 12 years and never had to pump the tank, but I put in the biggest tank I could with a lot of field lines. :D

In Wisconsin a septic system must be inspected every three years. The cost is not much cheaper than a pumping, so it's usually just as simple to have the truck out every three years.

I have been here for 25 years....

1000 gallon tank. 1200 sq ft leach field... Ground is very porous... Perculation rate is outstanding....

I just add one jar of Fleismanns yeast every fall and the bacteria does it's thing...... I have had it pumped once a few years back since I have it connected to my 2 full hook up 50 amp RV sites and they do tend to dump more stuff in then my normal household stuff....

A properly operating septic system should need to be pumped every 20 years or so,, IMHO...

was $200.00 to pump it.....

The pumping frequency in a traditional system is not determined by the leach bed size.

It is determined by the tank size, water usage, the solids put in the system, and whether you are "killing the bugs" or "feeding the bugs" with the other assorted chemicals you flush down the drain and disposal.

Don't cheap out and extend the pumping too far. If you let the solids fill to the point they spill over the baffles and into the leach beds, you likely killed your beds. I just replaced the leach field on mine last year after it was abused for years by the previous owner.

If the geology doesn't support a leech field (iow the lot doesn't 'perc'), the sprinkler systems are often the only way to make a lot buildable. A 'moss pile' or a swamp with reeds are other ways to get this done. Also, by putting the effluent onto vegetation, you have a 'nitrogen sink' which makes the crabs in the bay happy :wink2: .

Thanks for that table. When I get home I'll try to look up the size of my tank.

1250 gallons. So it should be good for 15.6 years with one person. I'm somewhat less than one person since I'm gone quite a bit but I should probably have it pumped in the spring.
