My first time hand propping with a dead battery

My mechanic installed the new battery and said it’s good to go. I asked what the voltage should be from the alternator and he said 13.3V-14.2V is fine.

13.3 volts will just start the new battery sulfating. It needs to be fully charged to drive the sulfate off the plates and back into solution.

The battery stores energy between lead and lead peroxide plates, immersed in sulfuric acid. As it discharges, the sulfur leaves the acid/water mix, joins with oxygen from the acid, and forms lead sulfate on both plates. If that stuff is allowed to stay there it hardens and will not dissolve and convert back to sulfuric acid, lead and lead peroxide during recharging.

My mechanic was able to adjust the voltage regulator to 14.5Volts. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Which might have fixed the problem even without a new battery. OTOH, if you're planning a long overwater flight a new battery is probably a good thing anyway.

That’s what I was thinking too.

The old battery, charging for who knows how long at 13.3 volts, was likely badly sulfated and about to check out altogether.
