There is discussion about how light sport pilots can take a 16 hour class (or a longer one) to get either a light sport inspection or mechanics certificate. p.432 expands this ability to include EAB aircraft (such as my RV10).

So my question is, where can I go take a 16 hour or longer class to get a light sport inspection and/or mechanics certificate?

I did the Rainbow course. It is offered in different places during the year.

Those guys are about to get a bump in business for sure. Reminds me of the mad dash of 2016 (old written last date to use it for ATP before CTP, ask me how I know). Lot of outfits popped on the proverbial mall parking lot, cashed in, then disappeared. Some DPEs lost their cert, some ATPs had to re-do their checkrides. The profit motive corrupts.

All that said, if I ever find my EAB replacement at the desired price point and get back in, I'll be spending the moola to get the LSR(I? M?) and be able to run my own condition inspections. I'm also glad the stall speed is not a factor, as some of my EAB options do not conform.

Yes, I'm wondering whether to get a reservation in quick for the next available class, or wait to see if more classes are offered closer to where I live.

I'm also wondering how this change reconciles with my plane's operating limitations, which say the inspection has to be done by the (named) builder, an A&P, or a repair station. Don't I still have to comply with my OLs?

There are no open classes anywhere

Unfortunately it may be a while before classes open up. Rainbow has an excellent curriculum, but there’s only two of them and each maintenance class is two weeks with approx 15 students. Maybe they will focus on the 16 hr inspection course more and have more of those available. I suspect they won’t have to offer weekend classes around the country for a while as I’m sure a lot of folks will be willing to make the trek to Kingsville…

They also may need to tweak the courses for the new rule and that could take some time as well…

What's your price point?

I have the same question / interest. I've emailed Rainbow and received an immediate automated out of office until Aug 4th response.

There's an A&P school near me and I know one of their instructors. I may try and get ahold of her to see if they might be able to offer the LSRI 16 hour course.

I took my 16 hour LSRI course from Michael Huffman in Lawrenceville, GA near Atlanta.

Not sure what courses he’s offering now, but here’s his website:

He also handled the E-LSA conversion of my Sky Arrow back in 2009. Nice guy.

I was one of his students at a college in Orangeburg SC many years ago. I agree ... he's a good man and I really enjoyed the course.

There was one student that failed to pass the written test (he was one of the group of six of us that traveled together to the training). I heard, but can't confirm, that Michael set up a time for the student to retest a few weeks later. No idea how that went.

in AnP school we had 120+ hrs in hands on structures alone. not to mention weeks of theory and applications of Al, composites and wood/fabric construction.

how in the world can you teach those three subjects to a level of proficientcy in a couple of days?

I don't see how the FAA can justify SLAI/M and still think safety standards will be maintained.

My guess is that they looked at the safety record of LSA and ELSA over the past 21 years…

Do you have to know how to build something to inspect it?

Meh, specious "breath and depth" pretenses. You know what this is really about: The 51% gatekeep is OVER, fam.

I know I know, that builder inspection authority psychic wage is powerful stuff, but y'all be alright. This hobby needs more playas, and less playa hatas. Let's leave the gatekeeping rancor to the fac-built poor-shamers and their rent-a-pen overlords.

What's your price point?
About current lower end RV-4 prices, but I don't want a taildragger. 6As are about double that, which is wild. Inventory of Glas 1FTs and 2s dried up, so I went passive for a while. Lancs are stupid priced (no offense, don't think they're worth current asking), so they're not in my radar scope.

I've been so beat down that I almost made a huge mistake and started looking into a slow fac-built in my price range just to save me from a weekly hyper-commute (200sm each way by car, every weekend) that's wrecking my health and quality of life for the past 18 months. But this LSRI expansion stuff has recaged me back to sanity. We'll see how the economy fares in the Fall, might be able to get into something.
