Yeah, Corollas with automatics seem weak. Those engines like to spin FAST -- they are direct acting OHCs -- and can get pretty zippy when you spin them up when accelerating, all the while sipping fuel. You can do that with a stick. I got almost 40 MPG highway out of my 1.6L 1995. And it lasted almost 300K miles before my wife crashed it.

Good plan. The last one gave you good service, there's no reason to think this one will do any less. Also, way to stick to your guns and get the manual. I gave mine up this spring, and I still miss it.
