Look at all the money airlines are going to save...

I know there are plenty of disagreements on technology on this forum, old school vs new school, the Magenta line vs the old way...yadda yadda yadda, but I think one thing we can all agree on is there is nothing cool about pilot-less airplanes...

I actually saw one of these taxing the other day and big black SUV following it for whatever reason. was too mesmerized to take the phone out and snap a pic

With the crazy long life cycle of airplane design, certification and production - my bet is that there'll be time for people to get comfortable with automation in their cars, trains or whatever else before airliners come around. By then it'll be old hat and people won't be uncomfortable anymore.

I actually saw one at my 7 o'clock and less than 1 mile. Approach called it at my 9 o'clock but it took a few seconds for me to spot it. It was followed very closely in trail by a 172 or 182. I too was too mesmerized to snap a pic, but I doubt I could have gotten a decent pic anyway given its heading relative to mine.

Regardless of whether the technology is there...I think it will be a LONG time before you see pilotless airliners. I could be wrong.

and some said that about the horse.....there was a time when everyone had one or more.;)

Time will tell...but I think it is total BS that you will see completely autonomous airliners in the next 20ish years. You might see single pilot...

We'll have driverless cars soon enough (I saw a news article today that one such prospective driverless car company is having their safety drivers dress as - you guessed it - car seats. Restaurant order-takers are being replaced by kiosks or iPads.

The flight engineer was eliminated pretty quickly once it was accepted that a cockpit crew of 2 was good. Next logical step is to eliminate one of those 2 pilots.... unions permitting. The pilot shortage may push that technology faster than you think.

Train conductors lasted a long time. Okay, they still have conductors just not in a caboose.

FTFY!

I've seen far too many software rollout to trust their programming committee, to say nothing of the excellent committee results that I've seen, too . . .

Be careful what you wish for you might have a robot taking over your job soon ;)

You can always count on change. How fast it proves cost effective and excepted by the public is another story.

Hell I don't even care to fly commercial these days. I doubt I'll be around when commercial flights go pilotless.

yes....then there'll be another step of progression. :D

There is a huge difference between being able to get it right and never being able to get it wrong. Right now they can usually get it right. Until something goes wrong, then they just don't have a clue.

AF 447 is a prime example. Yes, the copilot stalled it. But the copilot was flying it because the computer got it wrong

Build a little.....test a little....build some more.....test some more.....till it's right and proven right. The automation will progress....till it's right and trustworthy

Eventually yep :D:D

They'll probably have remote pilots in India getting paid $1/hr as a backup

Automated butt wipers soon to be released CNN says so
