Local jerk steals nice 172

Not drugs, stop watching Miami Vice. Suicide is painless, but not for the pretty C-172s. Big mental issues or smaller mental issues magnified by (not getting the)girl trouble. They should add a studliness test to the medical. Or legalize prostitution. Where are the keep your laws off my body ladies when it comes to selling sex?

This will NOT look good on his resume....assuming he is ever found. I don't wish mental health issues on anyone. I feel bad for this poor mom.

He should have stolen a barely flown hangar queen. Might go weeks or even months before it was even noticed missing.

the search for the 172 can follow the search for the Malaysia Airlines 777

Mama's boy that couldn't get the girl. He is at the bottom of the ocean, sadly.

He had recently been arrested:

This is the second time in 7 years that someone has taken a 172 from Advantage Aviation without authorization:

Hmmm, so the guy who took the plane was recently arrested whil in CA for drugs and battery, the other guy who "stole" an aircraft from Advantage aviation had drugs in his system too..

How often do flight school planes go missing and are stolen by students, in my time instructing it's a really rare event, as can be seen by how few FBOs bother with crazy security or background checks.

Now you have one FBO who had two planes stolen in rather short order, both people who took planes were students and both were involved in drugs.

Seems some interesting odds IMO.

Wonder if something else is going on here.

Actually, the most recent guy was a CFI according to the article.

Flight school I take lessons from had one of their planes get taken out without reservation/permission a few weeks ago. It was brought back, so not technically stolen I suppose.

Embezzled is more like it.

He was tracked offshore of San Diego. A 400 mile suicide flight seems a bit long when he could just point the AP on a 270 heading and be out of radar range in 30 minutes.

He was rather obviously headed for Mexico. The reason is, of course, speculation.

Unless he didn't want his body/wreckage found, and didn't anticipate being tracked. The obvious place to look would be due west. He wasn't obviously heading anywhere. He may have been headed to Mexico, he may not have.

Let's say the Feds were after me and I wanted to disappear and start a new identity. I'd probably do the same thing.

Think about it. You aren't going to fly in to an airport of entry. You're going to fly it to some back country air strip, and walk away with a new passport drivers license, and a hefty wad of cash. He didn't just do this on a whim.

If I were going to disappear it wouldn't be in an airplane. I would be completely untraceable.

Well if he didn't off himself he is hoofing it back to FL to stalk his ex gf. Shouldn't those aerostat balloons know exactly where he is:dunno:

N191TG is a 2011 model with G1000 and GFC700. I wonder if he programmed in a southbound route, firewalled the throttle while standing outside the airplane and let itself fly to Mexico while he drove to Canada.

Again, that doesn't make a lot of sense just to throw someone off track. If he flew it in to and landed it in Mexico or some Central or South American country, he could easily pocket fifty grand for it. Maybe more. What's the #1 thing you need when you disappear?

Maybe the girl he was after was amelia earhart and now he's got her

Good point. I wonder what the job market down there is like for under-the-radar (both literally and figuratively) flying work?

A case of Trojans?

Yeah but you have to have enough cash to give to the kid standing outside the 7-11 to buy them for you because you're too embarrassed to ask Deepak for a box of smalls.

That's why I'd head for an Asian country...

ego boost.

Ever gone looking for a downed aircraft?

200 miles offshore, and it would NEVER be found. Nor would it be tracked on radar even at stratospheric altitudes.

While it might be obvious to look west, all anyone is going to see is thousands of miles of empty ocean.

Heck, the USS Macon was found 60 years after it crashed, and only by a several million dollar deep sea submersible investigation. And it was known exactly where it went down.

From the thread title I thought this would be about Captain.

Who in Mexico is going to give him $50k cash for the plane instead of just taking it? Seems risky.

Risky for the pilot delivering it. But paying 50k for a 300k airplane and you can probably fly it for years without anyone calling you on it? Easy equation, if you are a drug lord, or even a successful rancher.

70 miles offshore? No way....he's fish food. Probably fired up a doobie & put his earbuds in until the gas ran out.

Cartel would want it, but they wouldn't pay for it. If they got to him first, they would sweat him for information about anyone he cares about - probably his mother. Then they would show him a picture of her in her house sitting uncomfortably next to some rough guy. Then they would load up the plane with whatever they wanted to ship North, give him a map with the drop point marked out, and tell him the deadline he needs to beat to save his mother. Probably keep one of his fingers or toes just to keep his mind focused.
